Downtown Glam on Granville Street in Vancouver

By Tina, Miss Teen British Columbia 2017

Fashion in downtown Vancouver displays how young women and men can express themselves freely while feeling comfortable in their own skin, which I think is undoubtedly one of the most important and fascinating functions of fashion! For this blog assignment, I decided to shoot Vancouver’s signature styles on Granville street, which I think is an accurate representation of what downtown Vancouver is like: high-fashion, glamorous, but also serene and beautiful all at the same time.

There are many young women and men in this city with busy lifestyles who like to dress themselves with a pop of personality that shows off their character and preferences, so that’s mainly what I had wanted to capture. The city’s tall, towering buildings also make a nice scenic view, combined with the buzz of laughter and conversation, as well as the rush of people passing by with their coffee, it’s the perfect place to bask in the city ambience. This street’s abundance of designer stores and brands has clearly shown in the people who patronized it, everyone has on a variety of eye-catching and bold clothing. It’s rather hard to conclude everyone’s style into one phrase because of how unique each individual’s outfit is, so let me take you on a walk down Granville street, Vancouver BC!

Here is Alissa; I felt it was important to get to know our subjects and learn about what lead them to their personal fashion choices. Alissa is fourteen years old and currently a high school student, but she frequently visits the downtown area of Vancouver with friends to hit the shopping centres and to embrace the local city atmosphere.

Alissa’s very kindhearted and outgoing, she loves to socialize and have a good time. As you can see from the picture, she loves the casual look with simple, but well-paired colours. With a white trendy off the shoulder top with flounce cuffs from Forever 21, classic yet urban ripped denim jeans from American eagle, and a laid-back flannel from Garage. She accessorized with a black leather bag from a thrift shop and some plain white Converse sneakers. The whole apparel gives off an unsophisticated modern vibe, with the flannel giving it a colourful kick and cotton top adding a nice feminine touch. Alissa feels that her fashion inspiration comes from the one and only fashion icon Kendall Jenner, who has a similar casual and chic style in her daily life. With the entire outfit under 200 dollars, it perfectly showcases a teenager’s wardrobe necessities, and how you don’t have to buy expensive or extravagant fashion pieces to pull together a great look!

Our second model is 18 year-old Philip, who has just graduated high school and is moving on to university! He pursues sports in his free time, but other than his basketball shorts and runners, his wardrobe contains quite a few well-developed and bold statement-pieces for nights out with friends, or just a casual stroll down Granville.

He wore a basic white tee from Old Navy, a light blue denim shirt from H&M rolled up to show off those forearms, white ripped jeans from Pacsun, small sunglasses from Ray-Ban, and camel-coloured boots from Tokyo, Japan! The white, blue, and camel colours contrasted nicely, making the ensemble look clean, put-together, but nonetheless expressive and stylish.

Phillip likes to emphasize on comfort and material in his everyday fashion choices, he likes to wear things that have a great fit but still look pleasing to the eye, and something that will give him mobility and allow him to stay active throughout the day. “The more tight the more right” does not exactly accommodate his beliefs when it comes to his own clothing. This outfit is a bit more high-end, and overall provides a relaxed and slightly business casual feeling while simultaneously illuminating Phillip’s personality as an athlete and socially active teen.

Next up is Jessica. She’s fifteen years old going on grade ten, and she is all for fashionable outfits that are expressive but also uncomplicated. She appreciates different unique items that work perfectly as a combination.Jessica on Granville St in downtown Vancouver wears ripped jeans and mauve blouse with leather purse

Jessica is especially intrigued by the city lifestyle, is always up for venturing and it comes out in her cool outfit! With a blue and white striped off the shoulder shirt from forever 21, ripped jeans from Topshop, high heel black booties from Nordstrom, cute watch from Michael Kors, and black bag from Coach, Jessica rocks the sweet and stylish look, giving us a glance at her vivid, independent, and creative personality. Jessica looks up to iconic Selena Gomez for fashion inspiration, because she sees herself in Sel and adores the trendy and bold vibes. Well, I don’t know about everyone else, but I can totally see an awesome Pop Star in Jessica, she is absolutely killing it!

Roaming the streets of Vancouver, and seeing everyone’s fashion choices made me realize that when you’re out and about, comfort is the key, and also that regardless of what you wear, as long as you feel good, nothing else matters. I think people’s love for fashion is not just about the artificial aspects like brand and material, but rather how confident you feel when you put on an outfit, and how satisfying it is to look in the mirror and really be proud of your reflection. Which is especially important for people who live in big cities like Vancouver, who should take the time to shop for their ideal outfits and take the time to appreciate and celebrate themselves amid their crazy and hectic lives. Because that’s what fashion should really be about, something to make your strides just a little bigger, yourself a lot more confident, and your day much better.

Fashion will always be a one-size-fits-all, because anyone can pull together a great look even with a smaller budget, and everyone can and should express themselves through how they dress.

From what I’ve seen, fashion in vancouver in three words would be: simple, stylish, satisfying. I loved seeing how everyone’s outfit showed the world a significant aspect of their life and diverse personalities, and I can’t wait to see what everyone thinks about these three wonderful teenagers and their outfits! I hope you all enjoyed catching a glimpse of Granville downtown street chic.

Fashion in Abbottsford British Columbia

Fashion on Montrose Ave. in Abbotsford, British Columbia

by Georgia, Miss Teen Fraser Valley 2017

Living in the Fraser Valley you get to see a lot of different fashion styles, especially in the summer. This year’s summer has been quite hot with some days being close to 40 degrees Celsius. Thus staying cool is a big priority when picking out an outfit. I personally take fashion inspiration from all over the world and through many eras, though I have to say that the 60s are favourite. What I love about the street I chose, is that as you walk down it you will see so many different and unique styles that all look good. Montrose avenue in Abbotsford, BC is located at the heart of its historic downtown. Both sides of the street are full of bakeries, vintage shops, boutiques, music shops and so much more.

Veronica white cotton blouse on door step beside old bicycle

Veronica is a University student with a great sense of style. She is currently studying science at SFU but has decided to change her studies to become a fashion designer. Come next year Veronica is traveling to Asia and hopes that while she is there she will find lots of inspiration to help her in the future. Veronica is wearing an upcycled white vintage top, a mauve high waisted pleated skirt that she custom made and white Adidas runners for $75. She has paired this outfit with a super cute light pink purse from Michael Kors for $198. Veronica is pictured outside Invana TeaHouse on Montrose ave. in Abbotsford. I chose this location because of the vintage and rustic feel the business gives off.  This outfit is super cute and casual, which is perfect for the hot weather in the Fraser Valley. In this ensemble you can go for brunch or a walk in the park;  her skirt and shirt combo really has no limits.

Fashion styles in Frasier Valley British ColumbiaCamillie is a university student and loves to express herself through her fashion. Camillie and her two sisters run a fashion instagram (@fashionandfetch ) where they show off their different styles to the world. They hope to inspire others to do the same. Her influence comes from all over the world and she is always looking for the perfect items to add to her closet! The orange shorts and white shoes that Camillie is wearing come from different shops along the beach in Chile This helps to make her style even more unique. The red bodysuit is from Urban Behavior and the black belt is thrifted. I chose to go with an off-white wall in one of the alleys along the street because I really wanted the bright colours of this summer outfit to pop! I love how Camillie has pulled the red together by adding the sunglasses and having the small red detailing on the shoes. Doing this really helps to make a complete look that’s ready for the beach or a local festival.

Red Camille with big red bag in Abbottsford British ColumbiaLastly we have Camillie, again, showing us a different side of her fashion personality. This more dressy look is perfect for a summer date or afternoon tea in the garden. The flowers in the background add a fresh feel to the street and really help to the the dress stand out. Camillie loves to have statement pieces which is why this Red Madison Tote from Shop J&G for $56 is perfect for her. The dress she is wearing from Zara. She may love a statement piece but she knows when enough is enough, which is why she has paired this outfit with a set of nude platform heels. The heels and purse together give Camillie the perfect amount of statement.

Fraser Valley’s fashion is truly complex, and I haven’t even started to show you half of it. If you want to get the full feel come down to Montrose avenue in Abbotsford, grab a cup of coffee and a pastry from one of our local shops, and see for yourself just how diverse our summer fashion is!

Kayla country girl on Queen St in New Brunswick

East Coast Girl on Queen Street in New Brunswick

By Breanna, Miss Teen Maritimes 2017

On a beautiful Wednesday evening on Queen St in New Brunswick, I was able to take some lovely shots of Kayla.  She was so nice to have taken the time to do a mini photo shoot. Although she’s actually really used to it, considering she’s modeled for Facade International, and is very talented as well as beautiful. Her modelling career is going great! But this girl is also very intelligent. She’s hoping to become a lawyer and go to college in the upcoming years. However, before she does all that, she dreams of taking a year off. The reason would surprise you. She said, ” I want to take a year off first to go on a humanitarian trip to Africa to help the less fortunate because I feel like I’ve been very blessed in life and should give back”. And if you know Kayla like I do, you know that she’s crazy for pageants. She’s always done them and will hopefully continue on! So far, she’s been in 4 pageants. Luckily, she’s got her family there to support her. She has a mother and a father, 2 brothers and 2 rabbits. She’s got an amazing personality and she’s got a lot to offer the world!

As you can see by the outstanding pictures, Kayla is wearing such a beautiful outfit. This is her style and she wears this kind of thing all the time. Starting with her glasses, they are very cute and goes really well with the whole look. They are Michael Kors and these glasses are a bit metallic and original. For their high quality, the glasses she is wearing for this look are worth 360$.

Kayla’s top is actually not from Canada. She bought it for approximately 49$ from Calvin Klein in New York, US when she went dress shopping for one of her pageants! It has this beautiful navy-blue tone to it with white cross lines. Also known as plaid. There are a few buttons in the middle of the shirt. And unlike some tops, they are workable and aren’t sewed on only for looks. She’s worn it multiple times, I don’t blame her because it goes really good with her hair.

Moving on to her casual long black skinny jeans, they were purchased at Garage in Moncton, NB. Almost as expensive as the top, these 62% cotton jeans where around 50$. Luckily these jeans have pockets that are not sewed on. Even though there aren’t any big designs on them, the dark black colour made it match really nicely with the top. So, this girl really knows how to mix and match!

For the beautiful sandals that Kayla’s wearing, they seem to be a very beautifully, silky texture. They were also bought in Moncton, NB at La Vie en Rose in the mall. The price of these are surprisingly low considering how lovely they are and how comfortable they are made. And the bright white makes them stand out from the outfit and gives it a little bit of colour, like the shirt.

This young lady isn’t wearing much for accessories, but she does have a black hair tie located on her wrist. Because that’s just how it is with us girls with long hair, always have to have one close by! All the pieces of clothing the beautiful Kayla has chosen for this specific purpose, go perfectly together and you could never go wrong with this look! You could also wear it pretty much anywhere since it’s causal yet a bit sophisticated. And hopefully it has given other girls maybe an idea of what could suit them.

Summer on Stephen Avenue Walk

by Mattea Henderson, 2017 Miss Calgary World

Summer is short in Calgary so ladies make the most of it. We have about six weeks of time to be flirtatious and bold with our everyday looks. Wear killer heels on a causal Tuesday, or festive cowboy boots because you are in the Heart of the New West. Calgary is not the Paris France of Canada, but if you can wear your heart on your sleeve and your head held high knowing you feel good in what you are wearing, I promise you your summer will be memorable and fashionable.

Fashion is a two-way street: how you feel in your choices of the day, and seeing people’s reactions to you loving what you wear when you pass each other. Stephen Avenue in Calgary, Alberta is a balance of corporate, tourist, and entertainment ventures, from main steam patios and restaurants, to buskers, and fashionable people laughing or smiling, or running to a meeting with a cup of coffee in hand. Stephen Avenue is a destination for all Calgarians to work and play!

Kayla is studying Public Relations in university, and is a student working full time this summer for an insurance claim agency. She somehow manages to not only take stylist on a university student’s budget, but does this all on the same street in Calgary! Kayla understand the importance of business to casual to edgy in the quick switch of a jacket, or a pair of shoes. She works just off Stephen Avenue, but she embraces the benefits to being right off one of the hottest places in Calgary if she needs a bite, getting dinner with girlfriends, or going to a concert!

shoulder strap dress on Stephen Ave in CalgaryDone with work and taking off her jacket left Stephen Avenue with a long-legged blonde in a black Aritzia crossed-strap halter top ($70.00), high rise black skinny jean from Urban Outfitters ($50.00), and a chunky heeled- strappy sandal.  Being able to go from corporate to contemporary to edgy can be done easily on a university student budget.

By focusing on acquiring pieces that are basics in her wardrobe, Kayla repurposed her back thick heeled sandals from Payless ($15.00), with a body-con dress in stone grey purchased from Aritzia ($60.00), with a classic worn-in black leather jacket from no other than Forever 21 ($20.00). Kayla was successful in embrace her edginess from corporate business woman by swapping out a piece or two in her wardrobe.

If you are looking for the new heart of the west, Stephen Avenue is the place to be during the second week of July. You will see anything from authentic cowboys and cowgirls, families dressed to the nines, but Kayla does it right. A baby blue denim off the shoulder summer dress from Urban Outfitters ($60.00) with nothing less than matching cowboy boots thanks to Lammles, and a leather cross body purse from Michael Kors ($130.00) pairs perfectly for a cute Calgary Stampede look!

Calgary fashion on Stephen aveThis look is authentic to Stampede or embracing Calgary’s western roots, but realistically cowboy boots can be extremely expensive, this $300.00 investment is a staple for Kayla and all Calgarians.

One Girl. One Street. Multipurpose pieces on a university student budget. Kayla is one to watch out for on Stephen Avenue whether she is working on settling an insurance claim, studying for exams at a coffee shop, or out for a night out with friends.
