Fashion as Art in Ajax Ontario

Fashion as Art in Ajax Ontario

Fashion is truly an art form. The way we chose to present ourselves to the world is an expression of who we are. For some, it can take a lot of courage to wear what they want, and others feel more beautiful when they follow current    trends. Regardless of what you wear, the clothes we put on every day are a representation of our personalities, our cultures, and our tastes. Here we will be exploring the styles of four Ajax teens and what Fashion means to them.

Maryam, 17

Jeans: H&M- $10
Top: H&M – $15
Sunglasses: Forever 21 – $7

Maryam has recently recognized the significance of the clothes we wear. “I never used to be that big on fashion”, she states in an interview, “but the past two years I’ve really been trying to find my style and what I like/how I like to wear certain clothes”.  Like most teenagers, Maryam is discovering herself and growing into her own skin. She likes the diversity that you see in clothes and styles and tastes and she really believes that fashion is an importanf aspect of everyday life. “I think fashion should mean something to everyone, everyone participates in it one way or another, I know it’s cliché, but fashion is a way someone can express themselves.” – Maryam

Louis, 18

Shirt : H&M – $20
Pants: H&M – $50
Shoes: Zara – $50

Louis is an artist. He sees the world from a very unique perspective. He’s fearless and confident and all of this is made apparent in the way he likes to dress. Fashion is a way for him to express his creativity and his artistry to the world on a daily basis.
“I believe fashion is just another window for self expression, its another form of art.” – Louis

Holly, 16

Shirt: Thrifted
Pants: Thrifted
Shoes: Thrifted
Thrift shopping has become a huge trend since Macklemore’s 2012 hit single “Thrift Shop”. People can find really great clothes at very low prices. Because thrift shops don’t usually carry anything “trendy”, they almost force you to create your own style.

Holly absolutely embodies this idea. She unapologetically wears what makes her happy. She understands the connection between the clothes we wear and our lifestyles and she embraces that every time she gets dressed. “Fashion is something that everybody has, either if it’s a trend or a unique style, it’s something that everyone can own, so own it!” – Holly

Barrington, 19

We’ve discussed how fashion is essentially a form of self-expression, but what do you do if nothing you find in stores represents you accurately? At age 18, Barrington launched his own street skate brand called “Suspended”. The brand has been doing well having launched multiple collections and is now able to ship Canada wide.

In designing the shirts and sweaters, Barrington has kept versatility in mind. “Fashion to me is doing whatever you want but being comfortable and still stylish at the same time. Turning basic clothing and putting clothes together and mixing different colours that complete outfits. Also adding little accessory can make an outfit pop and doing little things. Fashion is important because everyone’s fashion is different, everyone thinks about fashion differently but we still share the same things. That’s what I think fashion means to me” – Barrington

Being fashionable means something different to everybody. However, the bottom line is always the same: be true to yourself and do what makes YOU happy despite what anyone else thinks. Fashion and your own sense of style can be a powerful tool when it comes to owning your happiness and learning how to be comfortable with who you are. So use it wisely!

Beach Fashion, Ballgowns and Bling on Brant St in Burlington

By Lydia, Miss Teen Halton Region 2017

I see fashion as a strong form of expression. Your choice in what you wear each day is what you’re presenting to the world, and what you’re allowing pre-judgements of you to be based on. Variety in the fashion industry introduces individuality and ensures everyone gets to choose what they want others to see of themselves. From fancy gowns to ripped jeans to boho skirts, there is something out there for everyone. Having the freedom to express yourself through fashion is perhaps the richest opportunity out there, because it is entirely up to you what you want to portray yourself as on any given day. It is a lot of fun being able to step into a different life through different trends and styles, and I got to do just that with my sister and a friend on Brant Street in Downtown Burlington, Ontario.

Miss Teen Halton on Brant Street in BurlingtonBrant Street shopping district stretches from the heart of Burlington all the way to the pier by the edge of Lake Ontario. It is home to coffee shops, restaurants, banks, Tim Hortons (Canadian, eh?), fashion designers, tattoo parlours, and even a mini movie theatre! All the business owners I have approached on Brant Street have a love for the Burlington community and have shown me endless support through my journey to Miss Teenage Canada. On Wednesday afternoon, my two gorgeous models and I visited two stores on this scenic street, Forever Summer and Mirella’s Ladies Boutique, to showcase Burlington fashion.

Forever Summer sponsored me with a gorgeous two-piece swimsuit, supplied by a New Zealand brand, Piha, for Miss Teenage Ontario. Forever Summer truly captures the essence of the “beach life”, and every time I walk into the store I feel like it’s time for sun, sand and surf — never mind the actual weather outside. The owner, Valerie Dow,  always goes out of her way to pursue the perfect summer look for anyone searching.

My sister Hester, the first model of the day, is 18 years old. She grew up in New Zealand living by the beach, so beach wear is very familiar to her. Hester in swimwear in Burlington OntarioHester is an expert when it comes to “slaying” on the beach! Her look consists of a woven bag — perfect to carry all your beach gear — a thin cover-up, a wide brimmed white hat, and a gorgeous striped bikini from Seafolly Australia.

Natasha, the next model of the day, is 18 years old and grew up in Dubai. She is fun, compassionate, and beautiful inside and out. ready for the beach, swim wear fashion in Burlington Ontario Check out her look! She has a nice mini woven clutch, super chic round sunglasses, a black and white striped bikini and stylish black lace pants. Natasha was so excited to be wearing the outfit she picked. It made her feel confident and fierce. Fashion is powerful!

When I put on my chosen beach outfit, I felt as if I was instantly transformed into one of the beach models featured in magazines. It was so much fun to pose for pictures in the elegant and sleek black romper from Rapz and broad pink hat.

Mirella’s Ladies Boutique on Brant Street, was the second destination of our modeling trip.  And just like, in seconds we were transported from the beach to an evening gown extravaganza. Mirella herself was there to greet us and was excited to hear about the upcoming pageant. Mirella’s boutique sponsored me with my evening gown, cocktail dress and interview wear for the Miss Teenage Ontario pageant, and for that I am truly grateful. Mirella’s customer service is absolutely exceptional and she never lets anyone leave the store without going out of her way to help them find what they’re looking for.

Natasha and Hester both found the perfect dresses they wished they had known about at prom! Hester modeled a gorgeous, slim bright red gown and Natasha posed in a black and white evening gown. They loved the dresses so much that they couldn’t resist taking a selfie for Snapchat!

nude body gown at dress shop in Burlington OntarioI wore a nude body tight gown by J S Collections, the same brand as my white evening gown from Miss Teenage Ontario. The gown was exquisite, perfect for a gala or fancy dinner event.

Our trip to Brant Street was exciting, adventurous and extremely fulfilling, but the fun didn’t end there. We made our way to one final destination, Glamjulz where Monica, the owner of this unique jewellery shop is the most positive and outgoing person you could hope to meet. juice bar matron on Brant St in Burlington Ontario Her whole business runs off her bright aura! She never fails to wow Canada with her julz.  She is providing me with all the jewelry for my entire week in Toronto for Miss Teenage Canada! Her jewelry takes any outfit to the next level, and the best part is she makes custom designs! She is modeling one of her amazing looks.

Our Wednesday fashion excursion underscored how strong of a personal expression fashion really is and how much an outfit can speak to others. The girls and I went from beach girls, to princesses, to bling divas, all in one afternoon on Brant St in Burlington.

Female Bowlers’ Fashion in Sudbury Ontario

by Marissa, Miss Teen Greater Sudbury 2017

Fashion is everywhere! It’s something we deal with everyday. It consists of clothing, footwear, accessories, makeup and furniture. Fashion is a means of self-expression that allows people to try on many roles in life. Whether you prefer hip-hop or Chanel-chic, fashion accommodates the chameleon in all of us. It’s a way of celebrating the diversity and variety of the world in which we live. At the same time, fashion shouldn’t be taken too seriously or you lose the fun of it.

Fashion has been present throughout history and the trends change very rapidly and constantly. Fashion trends are influenced by several factors including political, economical, social and technological; the PEST analysis. Fashion forecasters can use this information to help determine growth or decline of a particular trend. The media can play a significant role when it comes to fashion. Editorial critique, guidelines, and commentary can be found on television, in magazines, newspapers, social networks, fashion websites and blogs.

Why does fashion always change?
Fashion changes indicate how a society or a culture can change. Fashion expresses where you belong, your financial status, political orientation, state of mind, identity and of course preferred music style. There are clothes which never go out of fashion, such as jeans, skirts and t-shirts, and wearing these items always radiate self-confidence. World events determine trends. For example the hippy culture was very popular in the 1970s and dominated the world of fashion.

Fashion recycles itself time and time again.

The following pictures were taken at Garson Bowl on Falconbridge road located in Sudbury, Ontario. It shows the different types of outfits these girls wear when they go bowling.

Hannah, age 19, is rocking a very cute but casual outfit. Her shirt was bought at Winners for 18$ and her jeans are from Garage for 40$.  Fashion isn’t always about who spends the most money, as long as you look confident you can rock anything!

Leah, age 17 (left), Mackenzie, age 17 (middle), Matilda, age 17 (right). Leah is wearing a very fun flirty off the shoulder shirt that she purchased at American Eagle for 40$ and denim shorts from Garage for 20$!

bowling alley fashion Mackenzie is rocking denim shorts from Garage for 20$ and a cute t-shirt from American Eagle for 31$.  Matilda is sporting a comfy but cute look! She’s wearing a t-shirt from Brandy Melville purchased for only 18$ and denim shorts from American Eagle for 50$.

Nothing is more beautiful than a confident person with a shining smile ready to take on the world.

Cambridge center mall on Hespelar Rd

Fashion at Cambridge Center Mall on Hespeler Rd

By Kaitlyn, Miss Teenage Waterloo Region 2017

On the Thursday before the August civic holiday weekend in Cambridge, Ontario, when all of our local-fashionistas are out preparing for upcoming endeavours, I took an opportunity to visit the Cambridge Center Mall on Hespeler road and get some inspiration. Along the way I happened to run into a beautiful girl named Chloe.

vneck tshirt from ReitmansChloe is 21 years old and loves to travel, in fact she moved to Canada 3 years ago from Wales.  She described herself as creative and shared with me her passion for drawing. So… what is she wearing!? Being a full time Pandora employee, her uniform requires her to wear black on black on black. Chloe is wearing a high fashion black twisted V-neck T-shirt from Urban Planet made from polyester and nylon which she purchased for $15. For pants she chose trendy black leggings from Reitmans made out of viscose and nylon for $45. Black Adidas flats, and 2 gorgeous Pandora bracelets and 3 rings all made from sterling silver, cubic zirconia, and pearl accents.

Next up in the Cambridge Center on Hespeler Road I stumbled upon a true beauty, Brianna. Brianna is the youngest out of 9 biological siblings, and also has 4 foster siblings! She just switched school’s at the age of 17, and currently works 4 jobs! Brianna is an equestrian, she loves to ride horses at Irish Creek Stables, and loves art and fitness. She was wearing a blue dress from Winners made out of cotton for $14, a cover up black jacket made from nylon and polyester also from Winners for $25. To tie the outfit together she wore a thick black belt made out of leather and elastic from Ardenes for $10. And on her feet, heels from Aldo for $80. I noticed this gorgeous ring on her finger as well, and it came out of a candle! Charmed aroma candles and bath bombs are gifts she receives often, and they definitely pay off. (And might I add, her makeup skills are incredible.)

Lastly, on my way home I bumped into Kimberly. Kimberly is 43 years old and in the pharmaceutical industry, she loves fitness, gardening and water sports at her cottage. When Kimberly has down time, she listens to audiobooks. In fact she just finished listening to 44 hours of Stephen King’s ‘It’ novel. Kimberly is wearing a Frank Lyman designer beaded white dress made out of lycra, nylon, and cotton which she purchased for $165. On her feet gorgeous sparkly heels from Aldo for $99 and on her wrist a FitBit Charge 2 for $169. This was taken on McFarlane Drive, in Cambridge Ontario.

My favourite part about seeking out the greatest fashions in my region was getting to meet new people. All of the girls were so lovely and helpful to me, I definitely made new friends today! This experience has taught me that you don’t have to be wearing Gucci or Kate Spade to be considered chic. If Brianna hadn’t told me her belt was from Ardenes, I would never have known. The moral of the story here is that you can be extremely fashionable and not break the bank. It’s all about knowing where to look. I hope this article changes your perspective about brands. Thank you so much to everyone who participated in the creation of this article, you’re all beautiful, and are definitely worthy of the title “Street Chic”.

Bringing Out Your Inner Beauty in London Ontario

by Miana, Miss Teenage Ontario 2017

Society often conforms to copy the latest styles and trends of today’s fashion icons. I believe its essential to pull inspiration for all of our role models, and create a look that highlights our individuality. In order to look good, it really is important that you feel your best in what you’re wearing that day or occasion. These are my 3 most useful tips when pulling together a masterpiece and staying true to yourself. I like to call this the guide, Bringing Out Your Inner Beauty.

I am showcasing an outfit on myself, Miana aka Miss Teenage Ontario 2017, which is a true reflection of my style and my personality. I’m an 18 year old who just graduated from high school and is ready to take on the world. Although my generation is heavily influenced by all types of media, I’d like to believe I’ve managed to dress in a fashion that is truly expressive of who I am. Following my 3-step guide, I composed this “Playful Couture” look.

Miana’s Guide to Picking the Perfect Outfit

My three step fashion guide can be followed for any occasion.

  1. Follow Your Vision

Principally, choose what emotion/mood you want to convey depending how you feel, whether it’s a mature look, a careless vibe, or even a sassy style. With this in mind, you will know exactly what’s working while searching for the perfect outfit, and definitely know what isn’t right. This vibe comes from within, but will be showcased, as your vision becomes a reality while creating this outfit.

While creating my “Playful Couture” look, I focused on bringing out my inner confidence. I wanted to create a mature look, while still bringing out my playful side. A stunning clothing boutique named “Jordan Stewart”, in my hometown, London, Ontario gave me the privilege to shop around their beautiful store for the perfect outfit. They have fairytale dresses, sophisticated jumpsuits and show stopping two pieces, which made choosing this outfit a little challenging. But, I remembered to stay true to Step 1 of my guide, and I was able to pick an outfit that was reflective of my inner confidence, while remaining playful yet sophisticated.

  1. Stay True To You

Secondly, while concentrating on your desired feel of the outfit, keep in mind that not every article of clothing will be perfect for you. Choose pieces that highlight your shape and complexion in order to make you shine. Choose to accentuate your curves, waist or even make your neckline the focal point. Remember that YOU are the artwork and your outfit is only adding to the beauty that it lays upon. It is essential to stay patient while shopping or trying on outfits so that you can optimize your experience.

In my opinion, this step is my favourite because it really allows you to be authentic. While trying on many different outfits at Jordan Stewart, this bold two-piece fit like glove and felt so right. I love the fact that the pink and white contrasts so nicely on my bronzed skin. These bright colours are not only a reflection of my inner character, but also my positive outlook on life. I chose to accentuate my waistline by wearing this peaking cropped shirt with the matching high waist pant. I love how this outfit resembles a mature pantsuit, yet is so playful as there is a flowy ruffle overlaying the top. This two-piece is named, “Where is Ken”, referring to the playfulness of it, likewise to Barbie. This fit is so seamless as it is Polyester and is the perfect outfit for a summer day being so light and airy as well.

  1. Perfect your masterpiece

Following your vision, and staying true to you will make this last step effortless. At this point, you will have an outfit that matches your desired mood while being mindful of what works for your individuality. Perfecting your masterpiece is your overall feeling from within. You must feel proud of who you are and how you are representing yourself for the occasion. It is essential not to seek acceptance from others, but to find the beauty in your own fashion. To pull your look together, find accessories that compliment your vision.

When completing my look, I knew it was perfect for me by the way I felt in it. This outfit radiates positivity and is a perfect match. Now that I am confident with the clothes I’m accentuating my body with, it’s time to further accessorize. I have chosen to pair this outfit up with a simple silver strapped 3.5” heel for added shine. I also chose a chunky silver watch to accent the amazing checkered pattern. Lastly, I put on pair of simple silver hoops to keep this look timeless. This outfit was the statement piece alone, so the simple silver accessories just embellish this “Playful Couture” look.

Shoes: Casper D’Orsay with Ankle Strap Heels in Silver by Bamboo

Watch: Marciano

An amazing local photographer, Ivan, captured this “Playful Couture” style in the downtown of the city I was born and raised in, London, Ontario. Our downtown runs all through Richmond Street, therefore we call it Richmond Row. Richmond Row has immensely inspired this look because it is full of all my favourite places, from the best vegan restaurants and cutest coffee shops, all the way to my favourite clothing boutique, Jordan Stewart. Another special part about Richmond Row is that there is the most beautiful park named, Victoria Park, where exciting festivals are held all summer. This perfect outfit was captured in July, the ideal season to rock this outfit in the park at the Food Festival or at the Sun festival. All of these amusing activities have helped shape this outfit and inspired it to be truly playful.

All in all, each outfit you wear should be a reflection of your personal inner beauty, rather than just following trends. Create your own looks to showcase your courageous individuality that way you can always walk with confidence.

Street Chic in Chapleau Ontario

By Emma, Miss Teen North Ontario 2017

I had the absolute privilege to be able to capture my childhood friends beauty within a few photos. It was so easy to take these pictures of these beauties, their pictures really impressed me due to the fact that they did an amazing job modeling their clothes. My first model “O,” (the first two pictures seen below) has been my friend for 13 years. She is a beautiful young lady that has grown up surround by wilderness her entire life due to the fact that she has grown up in our small town of Chapleau. O loves to keep active, she believes it is important to have a healthy lifestyle, that is why she does physical activity everyday and is running a half marathon this August.

O has a natural glow all due to the fact that she feels good on the inside which obviously makes her look great on the outside. She is a very kind and approachable young lady, this is why I am proud to call her my best friend.  She modeled a stunning sun dress purchased from the store Orsay from our trip to Europe this March. This outfit would be perfect to wear to a dinner date. It is very comfortable while looking chic and classy all at the same time. The sun dress also had a settle touch that consisted of a slit rip on the middle of the dress. O presented the camera a cotton knee length dress that was a dark shade of charcoal with strips of light grays falling along the side. She also decided to wear a gentle black shoe that she got from Call it Spring, the shoe complemented the dress ever so nicely due to the fact that it did not take away from her beautiful sun dress.

We took these photos on Birth Street in Chapleau Ontario, and never would have thought that a grungy corridor would be the perfect spot to capture such beautiful images.

My second model is “M,” she has also been my friend for 13 years. M is a very stunning young lady that has also grown up in our forest surrounded town her and lived right beside the beautiful Chapleau river her whole life. M is a 5’8 beauty that spends her summer days outside with friends exploring new adventures. She loves spending her free time outside enjoying our nature filled town.

M loves seeing new things and jumping on new opportunities, this is why she has been to Florida, South Carolina twice, Italy, Germany, Switzerland, and Austria. I took M’s pictures on Parliament Boulevard, Chapleau Ontario.

M is wearing a casual attire that you would catch her wearing to school or walking around the streets of Chapleau with her friends. This outfit is the perfect look for a teenage girl to wear on a nice spring day. It is comfy yet very cute, I am sure every girl loves being comfortable while looking stylish at the same time! Especially if you are a busy girl like M, you have to make sure you can go the entire day without feeling uncomfortable.

rural Ontario fashion shoot

If you are looking to recreate this perfect spring look, her casual blue cotton skinny jeans was purchased from American Eagle, her lacey top is from the stylish shop Garage and she paired this lovely outfit with army green shoes from Le Chateau. Working with these two models was a blast! They both presented me two very different looks, however the looks that they chose was a complete replica of their personality. Both looks can be worn where ever and when ever, they are both comfy and stylish which is a huge plus for any teenage girl.
