Summer Styles on Whyte Avenue, Edmonton

by Sravya, 2017 Miss Northern Alberta World

I thought long and hard about finding the most fashionable street where one can find the perfect outfit and draw inspiration to style themselves in the latest and trendiest clothing offered in Edmonton. From Jasper Avenue to the corporate world of the 50th street, I have explored them all to showcase the best styles around the city. But what stood out to me the most was the legendary Whyte Avenue, located in the heart of the Old Strathcona district. Named as one of Canada’s best shopping areas, Whyte Avenue offers a variety of retail from higher-end international fashions to quaint Canadian brands. With its chic boutiques blended with eclectic night clubs, Whyte Avenue has become an unconventional fashion runway in Edmonton. From ripped jeans & a simple tee to ethnic wears such as kurtis and Qi Pao, you can see a wide variety of fashions from all over the world on this avenue.

On mid-summers day of July 6th, I embarked on my quest to find the hottest outfits and comfortable styles on Whyte Avenue. My day was off to a great start when I ran into this beautiful lady. It was hard not to notice her as she looked angelic in her white, ruffled blouse she purchased at Simon’s for $29.99. Trends and seasons change but a black & white outfit is a universal combination that never goes out of style. Knowing this, Carol perfectly tucked in her white blouse with high-waist black culottes with pleats purchased from Zara for just $39.99. Carol likes to be comfortable while looking professional for her workplace. So she accessorized with a simple Swarovski necklace to add sophistication to her outfit. Finally, she finished off her look with a simple pair of black heels purchased from Aldo for $19.99.

Dan at University of Edmonton

Dan is a stylish engineering student at the University of Alberta

Accompanying Carol is Dan, an engineering student at the University of Alberta. He was on his way to meet with his friends at a local restaurant on his lunch break at work. He rocked the business casual look with his black on white polka dot shirt purchased from American Eagle Outfitters. To make the most of your outfit, it’s important to vary the choice of fabric depending on the time of the year. One of the most stylish fabrics that transcends across all seasons is cotton. To beat the heat while looking professional, Dan chose to wear lightweight, breathable cotton pants from Jack & Jones. To complete his look for the day, Dan rocked a pair of brown dress shoes he purchased from Saks OFF 5th. I particularly loved the way Dan bought class to his look with a leather watch he purchased from Fossil for $59.99.

Kina on Whyte Avenue in Edmonton

As I continued my journey along Whyte Avenue, I met this beauty with brains, an engineering student with a love for fashion.  In Canada, we find strength in our diversity – not just economically and politically but also in fashion. Kinza looked stylish and classy in her maroon colored kurti, a type of dress traditional to people from South Asia, paired with black leggings. The thin layer of silk fabric added a pretty flare in a gentle breeze – a look perfect for a July summer night. Kinza finished her look with a contrasting black scarf which she purchased at a charming boutique in Edmonton named Flora Designer Wear.

urban girl, Aly with baggy jeans in Edmonton

Aly in high-waisted vintage Guess jeans and a chic woolen crop top.

Old is always gold when it comes to fashion. From repurposing mom’s jeans to oversized t-shirts, imitating the trends of our previous era with a touch of modern simplicity is the new go-to for many teens. A fan of this trend, Aly styled herself in high-waisted vintage Guess jeans and a chic woolen crop top. She added modernity to her look with gold hoop earrings and shoes she purchased from Martiniano. Reviving the vintage look with her personal touch, Aly successfully created a nostalgic outfit that will take you back in time.

While a designer is merely a creator of clothes, fashion stems from your own personality and attitude. I chose to write about the above individuals because of how rather than what they wore. So whether you are wearing body swallowing hoodies or pencil skirts with a crop top, add your personal touch and flaunt it with absolute confidence. That is the essential key to being stylish and making a fashion statement.

Ladies Fashion for Hot Summer on Bernard Street in Kelowna, BC

by Natalie, 2017 Miss British Columbia World

Its July and 36 degrees in Kelowna’s fashion street; its hot on Bernard Street!!

Kelowna is known for its hot, dry summers and today is proof of that!  The city is surrounded by the beautiful Okanagan Lake and beaches like Gyro Beach are hopping!  Especially today, most of the residents are probably skipping work to escape for a dip in the lake, just to cool down!

Kelowna is located in interior BC, but there is a lot of fashion influence from the major city of Vancouver (which is only 4 hours away). Kelowna is also surrounded by orchards and wineries. Some of my favorite wineries in the Okanagan are: Quails Gate Winery and Mt.Boucherie Winery. With all the amazing wineries in Kelowna there are amble opportunities to dress up in cute Kelowna fashions on the way to different wine tastings.

Which bring me back to Bernard street where I have found some models who are not wearing bikinis and captured a few fashionista’s right downtown Kelowna modeling some hot summer styles! Bernard Street has an eclectic mix of boutiques and clothing shops, restaurants, outdoor cafes and ice cream stops.

Hanna is seen here wearing a cute summer dress by Forever 21. Her styling leather purse is Marc Jacobs and she’s wearing her comfy Converse sneakers! Hannah is a 28 year old working professional in Kelowna. Hannah likes to dress up but still feel comfortable while she balances working two jobs. She needs her clothing to be versatile, cute, and practical. For the hot summers in Kelowna, Hanna loves to throw on sun dresses.

Further down Bernard Street, I found the stylish boutique Blonde, which has been a popular shopping stop in Kelowna since 2004.

nicole in blue dress

Inside, I found Nicole, who was rocking her boho chic look that was all outfitted by Blonde. Nicole was wearing a 100% rayon, teal blue maxi dress by Love Stitch, which sells for $109.00 in the store. She accented it with the Brixton white hat that retails for $95.00 and her shoes were Steve Madden. Nicole set off her whole outfit with a funky necklace, made by who else? Nicole! She designs and makes jewelry that is all sold in the store, this piece for $40.00 so just check out www.nicoleyoungart.com for more of her designs.

The coolest (did I say coolest, which it isn’t today!) part about Kelowna’s Bernard Street is . . . when you get to the end of it, you’re right at the beach and City Park of Okanagan Lake. Anyone that works downtown, like I do, can take their lunch break right at the beach!

Madeline wears blouse at Kelowna British Columbia

It was here that I found Madeline, a University of British Columbia Okanagan student. She was on a job hunt, as she just finished her spring classes at University of British Columbia Okanagan, the week before. No better place to pose than in front of the “Sails” statue that is right on the end of Bernard Street.

Madeline’s fabulous shoes were from Top Shop and her black pants were from Latest Scoop in Vancouver. Garage outfitted her in her shirt and hat, with her necklace from Pyrrha and Madeline sported a Marc Jacobs purse to complete her look. Thank you for allowing us to capture your style, Madeline!

Now you know it! When you visit the beautiful Okanagan area of British Columbia, you must spend some time right downtown Kelowna on Bernard Street enjoying the awesome cafes and the unique boutiques on Bernard Street.  In the summer in downtown Kelowna, there are cafes, lives music, festivals, and so much to see and do.

Have a look and then go have a dip!

Fashion on Stephen Ave in Calgary

Fashion on Stephen Ave Walk in Calgary

by Maneet, Miss Southern Alberta World 2017

On July 7, 2017 I took to the ever-famous Stephen Avenue in Calgary as Miss Southern Alberta World to begin my street chic blog journey. When choosing what street I would use in this blog Stephen Avenue was the first place that came to mind without a single thought. In 2002 the street was declared a National Historical District!

Every person in Calgary knows the Stephen Avenue Walk, whether it be young or old. It is one of the busiest streets of downtown no matter which day you decide to go. This street is known as the ‘pedestrian mall’, with numerous stores, restaurants, entertainment and hot spots, there are also opportunities for smaller vendors to get their product and services on display. From a live band performance to clothing, Stephen Avenue has it all. This famous street is also the one place you can find people rocking all sorts of different clothing styles. It is definitely the epicenter of Calgary fashion as the street links to ‘The Core’, downtown’s largest indoor mall that carries almost every brand that you can think of.

To begin, the day was quite warm for what us Calgarians are used to at around 30 degrees

Thus the street was busier than ever and people were off enjoying their day in the heat. Thus I ran into quite a few stylish people throughout my day.

Bronwhyn on Stephen Street

Bronwhyn on Stephen Ave in Calgary’s downtown core.

The first was Bronwhyn, who was wearing a beautiful white chiffon dress by Jessica Simpson, she had purchased it from The Bay. With it she had paired a blue denim vest from Gap. Her mint green purse was by Kate Spade, which was also purchased from The Bay. Along with her dress she was rocking a pair of burgundy cowgirl boots by Riley and McCormick.

Next I saw Daniele, she was just finishing up work and was dressed up in spirit of the Calgary Stampede, which is an outdoor show that happens in Calgary every July. Daniele was styled in an American Eagle  purple and pink flannel and denim shorts along with a pair of sneakers from Keds Shoes. Her leopard trim glasses were from Forever 21 and only cost her $5!

Danielle and Wei on Stephen St

Wei’s outfit was definitely an eye-catcher for me, I could see her standing out from a distance. She was wearing a blue chiffon dress from The Bay, and white shoes from The Shoe Company. Her glasses were purchased from the Sunglasses hut, her hat and purse were from Aldo.

Me asking Mung

Maneet asks Mung why wear a black suit on the hot day?

Then I saw Mung, who was wearing a full suit on quite a hot day, he was actually heading to a quick meeting with someone at Cactus Club Café on Stephen Avenue. He was dressed in a double-breasted suit and shirt with French cuffs all from RW & Co. Interestingly; he had bought his shoes from Mongolia, and they were definitely eye-catching.

Brandon and Ryan on Stephen St

Bradon and Mung on Stephen Ave in Calgary

Bradon was just finishing up his day at work as he was heading out on Stephan Avenue. He was dressed in a navy blue block wrangler shirt and Levi jeans, while also sporting a white cowboy hat in spirit of the Calgary Stampede.  His shoes were from Larriat and watch from Hugo Boss.

Ryan Fashion on Stephen Ave in Calgary

Lastly, I met Ryan. He had recently just moved to the city and was out to explore the hottest spots, so I had caught him in just the right place. Ryan was rocking a navy blue suit from Calvin Klein, along with a striped J crew shirt. His shoes were from Johnston & Murphy, which he paired with colorful blue and green socks from Express.

As I was on the street I noticed that there were many diverse clothing styles, whether it be the men in business suits on a hot day coming from work, or the girls in dresses spending their day out. However none of them failed to stand out with their unique styles, which made my street chic experience on Stephen Avenue definitely a success.
