Sibling Fashion Clash in Lawn, Nfld

By Bailey, Miss Teen Newfoundland and Labrador 2017

We often look at style in a very black and white fashion, we see stylish individuals as those in tall heels and flouncy skirts, however, we don’t usually recognize style as soccer cleats and jerseys. Growing up with a younger sister who is the exact opposite of me allowed me to understand that just because not only our styles (like our personalities) clash doesn’t mean that one of us is more stylish than the other.Kennedy has soccer style - sports fashion in Victoria BC

Meet Kennedy, my 12-year sister, a grade eight student at Holy Name of Mary Academy in my hometown of Lawn. She is the starting striker of the local peninsula soccer team; when she’s not practicing her shot, she’s playing a game. Because of this, Kennedy lives in soccer uniforms and running shoes, that’s her style.

You can see her on my absolute favorite street in my tiny town, Harbour Drive, which runs through the heart of Lawn. I love this street so much because it holds so much history as it sits right on the edge of the stages and docks that supported the fishing industry, an industry that supported my community for many, many years.

Fashion clash on harbour drive in LawnKennedy is sporting a rather serious look in this photo and is decked out completely in Adidas; the black shorts and shirt are made of a light-weight, breathable material that makes busy days and practices more comfortable. Of course, no soccer game is complete without her favorite Adidas socks, with the signature stripe and to add some color to this ensemble she paired it was these lime green and bright orange, Messi cleats. You can pick up Kennedy’s entire outfit from your local Sports Chek. The caged rocks you see pictured behind Kennedy also hold great significance to me as I painted them as a child, with some of my best friends as an art project, just another reason to love this street.

Although Kennedy is much more comfortable in her shorts and socks she tried on my style for size and stepped out in this gorgeous floral dress from Nobel U. The beautiful blue and pink light up against her dark complexion. The background of this photo captures the spirit of my town perfectly and allows me to show off our beautiful history.

coral cream dress Of course, I couldn’t miss out on an opportunity to show off one of my favorite dresses from La Scala, a brand that is available for purchase at Pseduio, Envy and online. This dress is a beautiful coral-orange color with an eyelet lace bodice and a heavy skater skirt that is perfect for twirling around. I’ve paired it with a cream, rhinestone, floral shaped necklace from Ardene; the creamy beige color contrasts nicely with the bright dress. To finish it off I’m wearing cream and floral heels from Call It Spring, the floral print is a lovely mix of blush, coral, and raspberry.

Although my sister and I have widely different styles, we both love how we dress, we feel comfortable in our own personal fashion choices. No matter what we wear or how we choose to express ourselves, we always remember that we are our own kind of beautiful and our styles are simply a reflection of that, the most important lesson is to understand that our beauty lies beyond our style and beyond what is on the outside but lives within who were are as people.

Three Times Chic in Stephenville Crossing Newfoundland

by Madison: Miss Teen Western Newfoundland 2017
In my hometown of Stephenville Crossing, we have one busy street which is coincidentally called Main Street.  And by ‘busy’, I mean you may see one or two people walking around. Since it’s so small, I’d have to stay out there all day waiting for someone with a booming outfit to come along. So I chose instead to cover three of my own looks. I like to think I have my own style, one that comes as a mixture of my personality and what I enjoy in today’s fashion.

I’ve always experimented with my outfits since my mom started letting me play dress up in her closet. I’d smother my face with the brightest lipstick I could find, accessorize with a pair of cool sunglasses and a feather boa: then have my own little photo-shoot. With that being said, I put together two inexpensive outfits and one that’s more name brand. I do lots of shopping from inexpensive stores and thrift stores. Remember that you can look beautiful and expensive even when you’re on a budget!

My first outfit is one of my favourites. Instead of heading straight to borrow from my mom’s closet, I went for dad’s! I love oversized shirts because they are so vintage and cute to style. My dad grew up in my hometown, and kept this softball jersey from his old Stephenville Crossing team. I’ve ‘borrowed’ it from him because I love navy blue and button ups (win win)!

On my head I have a sweet headband that I got from shein.com for $6.44! They ship super quick, within in a week. and the prices are so good! About the boots; remember how I was talking about stealing from closets? No, they’re not from my dad’s closet as you might think, they are my mom’s.

Madison Fashion in NewfoundlandMy second outfit came mostly from one of my favourite stores, Fashion Nova, and a little bit from my Mom’s closet again. Those cute blue cowboy boots are my mom’s but I believe she got them from Byrnes’ Shoes & Sportswear. The gorgeous tie-up blue and white striped top can be found on the Fashion Nova website. It’s on sale for $12.61 until Monday, August 7th! On to the shorts; I LOVE these shorts, they are my absolute favourite. Fashion Nova has the nicest shorts and jeans. Everything fits just right universally (meaning they make your booty look cute no matter your size)!

My third outfit holds the closest place in my heart because it strikes my personality to a T! My fashion style is effortless, like I’ve just rolled out of bed in a way. Either way, I am in love with my Juicy Couture track suit. I’ve been looking for one for ages and guys, these are crazy expensive, but when I went to Sears I got it 50% off!
Woohoo! Onto the furry slides… I love these so much, I have about 6 different colours. Pink is my favourite colour of course. You can pick up slides almost anywhere since they’re so in right now, but I got mine from Shein.com.  Slides are the best because they’re really comfy and they can go with anything. If you don’t believe me, just try it. It’ll make your outfits look casual, but casual as in a sleeping beauty kind of way.

Self-love is limitless. Dressing up in your cutest outfit just to lay around the house is not strange, it’s empowering. Give a girl the right pair of shoes and the perfect shade of lipstick, and she will take over the world. Take the time to figure yourself out. Find out what you like to wear. You’ll really learn to love yourself once you know yourself a little better. Experimentation is key.

Hometown Fashion in Stephenville Newfoundland

by Jessica, Miss Teen East Coast 2017

When I first arranged this photo session with my girls, I’m not sure what they were more excited about, the fact they got to dress up in the fanciest clothes they could find, or that they were both going to have a million pictures they could post on Instagram. They are absolutely incredible, and a big thank-you goes out to the both of them for not only doing this for me, but doing it so well.

Mackenzie, is 17 years old, and her favorite sports are volleyball and running away from her phone when I’m looking for her. She has the face of an angel and a heart just as pure. Mackenzie, or Kenz is one of the kindest souls I’ve ever met, but her saucy personality will always keep you laughing.  She’s one of my greatest friends, and I do not know where I’d be without her.

Kenz golden hour in Stephensville

She jumped at the chance to dress up, even if it was only for a couple pictures, as we both work with a kids’ summer program and make-up is a foreign object that is not heard of while working with kids. She jumped out of her athletic wear and into a gorgeous piece by Nightway. This long romper is composed of a composition of a form fitting top and lose bottom, 95% polyester and 5% spandex blend this is the perfect jumpsuit for casual or a more fancy occasion. The wide straps make the fit comfortable, while the mesh deep v-neck gives this jumpsuit style and flare, the form fitting waist line accentuates the waist to give her an incredible shape. The flow from the hips to the ankles give this piece sophistication, the black is, well- black will always be the best color to wear. This piece was purchased from Winners for a price of $49.99, on her feet was a chunky, floral wedge from Spring.

Kenze in floral dress in Stephensville NewfoundlandSarah; 18 years old, I don’t know what she enjoys more; spending money on makeup or David’s Tea, but she will make you laugh until your stomach cramps without even trying it. Sarah has been a best friend since we were younger and never will there ever be a dull moment with this sweetheart, still she is one of the kindest humans I know and I cherish our friendship to the highest.

Where she works as a life guard, also at the summer program with me and Mackenzie, she was thrilled at the chance to dress up. Sarah slipped into a stunning black summer dress, thick straps again for comfort, an elastic at the waist to accentuate her amazing waist line, a lace finish all around the bottom for style and an open back concept to bring out the true feeling of summer. This polyester and spandex blend was purchased at Garage for a retail price of $39.99. This dress was just as flattering as fun for Sarah but it was the floral kimono that truly brought out her personality. The black kimono with white and pink accented flowers gave the look a flow and pulled forward Sarah’s outgoing and incredible personality, the pictures surly speak a thousand words. The kimono was purchased from Pseudio, a 95% polyester and 5% spandex blend was made by My Beloved and purchased for a sale price of $29.99. On her feet were a strappy black velvet sandal with a small chunky heel that tied up the ankle.

“In the streets of my hometown” I wanted to take this phrase abstract and literally. First I took the girls to Port Harmon, for those of you that have not visited Stephenville, this may be the most popular place to take an evening drive, walk, cycle, even roller blade. It is a very long road along the shoreline that leads to a smaller area of cabins and a dock for larger shipping vessels. Since we came from a fishing community I thought this would be a good place to have the girls show off their fashion and also represent where we came from. We started taking pictures here around 8:30 pm because the sun was not completely set and it made for an excellent background to the pictures, the mood was perfect.

late summer nights in Stephensville Newfoundland fashion promenadeAround 9:15 pm we relocated to Bruce Boulevard Street when there was still some light left in the sky but the flash on the camera could bring out the girls to highlight their outfits rather than the surroundings. This street is where our high school is located, Stephenville High School. After just graduating high school in June, it made me realize that most people in my town spent the better part of four years in this building, whether they were a good or bad experience it will always be a place people remember. So, having the girls model in the dusk on this street was also a good representation of our small town. The simplicity of just houses, cars, and street lamps in the background really just capture the small town feel, we are not very extravagant in Stephenville but still special in our own way.

I’m sure I had just as much fun taking pictures of these girls as they did getting their pictures taken, never do I stop laughing when I’m with these two dolls. It was such a fun, different experience and I love how much this journey has influenced me to try new and exciting things. Jess
