Jessica’s Fashion from the Streets of Markham

By Jessica Cianchino, Miss York Region World 2018

In the Greater Toronto Area, downtown Markham is the newest downtown.  This is my city!  Markham has many diverse cultures, many thriving and expanding businesses, and a wide range of entertainment for people of all ages and ethnicities.  And this small town turned big city, like myself, is just beginning.

Markham’s potential is well known.  As Canada’s High Tech Capital the area is a great place to live and work, and relax after work – its easy to find fun here.  My growing city has come to life with the development of a new and impressive downtown core, and this new commercial section hosts many modern attractions.  Cineplex VIP Cinema, as well as other diverse restaurants and boutiques are why my family and friends love going downtown.  Also, a merry-go-round designed specifically for the city incorporates all Canadian-themed sculptures. Experiencing the Pride of Canada Carousel is yet another reason why people should come see the amazing attractions in downtown Markham.

Property developers in Markham prove they are environmentally aware with every new building they erect; the Remington Group encourages green commercial developments. This development group set-up their own Environmental Quality Control program in an attempt to emphasize the importance of preserving the environment while expediently developing the downtown core. Remington Group’s green work was awarded LEED ® which is a fold status for residential and commercial buildings. This organization has implemented green practices in the newest urban areas by introducing natural light, solar power and fresh air.  I’m so proud that the city in which I live is not only growing in business and tourism, but also in environmental consciousness.

My style is influenced by Hip Hop music and urban culture.  The way I style myself mimics what I’ve seen in downtown Toronto, but I put my own twist on it. I usually dress in athletic wear, influenced by the sports I play, infused with styles from big city streets. People my age dress similar to those from the big city, however being from Markham makes my style unique to me.

Walking through our new downtown, I can feel the essence of my city captured through the street art made by local artists. The shops and restaurants run by local residents are bigger now and almost make me feel like I’m in a smaller version of downtown Toronto.  The City of Markham is growing into a city that will provide great opportunities and entertainment to its residents and it welcomes newcomers. It’s astonishing to witness my city grow into a bigger community attracting the attention of others all across Ontario. I remember growing up here before there was a downtown. Its so amazing to be able to watch my city flourish and expand into a successful place that welcomes all kinds of people, just as it has for myself and my family. I look forward to seeing the ongoing progress in the coming years. This new urban center, no matter how much it changes, will continue to be the heart of our community, and I am so proud to be a part of representing this growing metropolis to the rest of the world.

Fashion Gambles at the First Greenwood Stakes

The first ever Greenwood Stakes happened at Woodbine Racetrack on Saturday the 26th of May 2018.  This is a fashion event in an equestrian setting.  The festival is being dubbed Toronto’s newest society event at the races.  Big tents, food vendors, music and games took over the Woodbine Racetrack that warm Saturday afternoon until 7 p.m. in the evening.

horse race at Woodbine Racetrack - 2018 Greenwood Stakes

The event was crowded from 1pm to 4pm as eight hundred guests squeezed into the track-side enclosure at the east end of the Woodbine Raceway Grandstand. This area was made over with faux tropical trees and upscale patio furniture. The central terminal was a cavernous big-top tent that accommodated several HPIBET stations and cold food vendors which is similar to how the place is setup during Queen’s Plate event in July.  Outside the main area there were a variety of vegetarian and meaty sausage distributors, sushi makers and a pork-on-a-bun shop.

The people at this event were the real attraction; almost everyone here was an original and stylish entrepreneur or high profile business executive. Below is Christy Fenn a model and fashion designer, and Richard Carmichael a veteran web marketing strategist in Toronto.

Greenwood Stakes was filled with influencers who make media on Instagram and Twitter. Anyone can see their work by typing #GreenwoodStakes into Google or any social media platform. Here’s a dapper crew playing Jenga with foot long 2x4s at Greenwood Stakes at approximately 2pm. The Angry Orchard cider people had a big spread right beside the track.

Instagram influencers at Greenwood Stakes had all manner of things to photograph and some brought fascinating accoutrements to add to the scene. The lady below had a bird on her hand.

There were hats of all types, and men with stylish vests or suspenders over white cotton shirts. Lots of suit jacket blazers over matching dress shorts (very chic) and deck shoes worn with no socks. Almost all the ladies wore colourful hats or fascinators in their hair.

Hats were mandatory at Greenwood Stakes. Both men and women wore very fashionable designer hats.

Look above. These two gentlemen were NOT country music stars, but in fact stylish hat makers; they are clever craftsmen who make authentic old-school felt hats out of beaver fur.

2018 Style Stakes Best Dressed Awards at Greenwood Stakes

The 2018 Style Stakes Best Dressed Awards challenged the Greenwood Stakes attendees to step up their style game and push the fashion envelope for a chance at one of two $500 cash prizes and to become Greenwood Stakes Style Ambassadors in 2019.  At 3:30 pm, notable fashion industry judges selected ten finalists, five women and five men to bring on stage and show off their clothing ensembles.

The judges then awarded the coveted Belle Du Jour and Gallant Sartorialist awards, respectively. So who won? The information.

Cocktail Jockey Mixology Showcase saw five of Toronto’s top nightclub mixologists square off in head-to-head competition where they worked on stage to shake up the ultimate twist on a classic horseracing themed cocktail.  The winner would earn bragging rights and their cocktail recipe would become a signature cocktail at the Greenwood Stakes. So who won? This information.  Throughout the compound there were fruit-filled drink stations. Most alcoholic concoctions were ten dollars each and composed of rye, vodka or gin.  The ladies liked champagne cocktails.

Track-side bars lined the promenade and were tailor-made for sharable moments for our Instagram generation.  Toronto’s top mixologists smiled for cameras and shook up their own unique takes on the classic champagne cocktail, the mint julep, and other famous bourbon libations that are commonly associated with horse races.  These upscale bartenders were competing to create the perfect summer refreshment; they were inspired by recipes dating back to the early 1800s.  Led by Cocktail Director Evelyn Chick, the Cocktail Jockey Showcase featured custom cocktails that were handcrafted by Zak Doy (of the nightclub, Figo), Casey Ryan (of Civil Liberties), Sally Gillespie (Pretty Ugly) and Tyler Newsome (of Bar Raval).

The horses were famous too.  Among the runners was the 2016 Queen’s plate winner Sir Dudley Digges, and other celebrity horses that were big winners throughout the years.

the horses at Greenwood Stakes, woodbine Racetrack

They were running to win the $175,000 Grade 2 Eclipse Stakes which is a long-standing tradition that is now, informally, part of the Greenwood Stakes celebration at Woodbine Racetrack. Are You Kidding Me paid $5.60, $2.80 and $2.20. He combined with Melmich ($3.50, $2.40) for a 4-1 exacta worth $13.20. A $1 trifecta of 4-1-2 (Gigantic Breeze, $3.10) paid $16 and a $1 superfecta of 4-1-2-3 (Tizzarunner) returned $122.30. Tiz a Slam, also trained by Attfield, finished fifth while Sir Dudley Digges and Hollywood Critic completed the order of finish.

The Music was also impeccable. There was live music from one of Toronto based folk-rock quartet, Birds of Bellwoods, and popular DJs Eric Carver, Simon Jain and Conor Cutz, who covered a variety of genres including Hip Hop, RnB, Dancehall, Classic and Deep House.

The Art at 2018 Greenwood Stakes Pop-Up Art Gallery was curated by Toronto-based creative director, video producer and clothing designer Meghan Kraft.  The exhibit featured works from emerging Toronto artists including: Alpo Snow, Arturo “Duro the Third” Parada, Briony Douglas, Coup de Tête, and Jacqueline Poirier A.K.A. The Crazy Plate Lady.

Fashioning Superhero and Street Performer Costumes

This post is a bit of a departure from Street Chic’s usual look-book blog style, but superheroes are people too, and they are very much on-the-street and deserve some recognition for their fashion contributions. Talented people hoping to find success as street performers, or as superheroes must adopt costumes that accommodate their superpowers, but also their outfits must conform to loosely defined fashion principles which are proven to impact human consciousness.

Superheroes Make Their Own Costumes

Peter Parker homemade spiderman suit in movie Homecoming

Peter Parker’s first Spider-Man costume as seen in the movie Homecoming was a little rough around the edges.

Peter Parker’s costume-making episode and his first less-than-professional looking outfits as seen in the recent Spider-Man Homecoming movie was interesting and strangely indicative of the modern costume manufacturing marketplace.  The same spirit of costume making creativity is glimpsed in Kick-Ass in the scenes where Nicholas Cage and Chloe Grace Moretz, Big Daddy and Hit-Girl were still perfecting their homemade attire.  Costume making scenes transcend the central character’s story in the movie. These stories mirror the frustrations of modern-day performer who cannot find a suitable bodysuit or costume in their city or hometown. They must send measurements online. In the movie, there was a secrecy element, but in reality there are not many businesses who’ll spend any time creating outfits for street performers, or weapon encrusted gadget suits for superheroes. Oftentimes the performers themselves must fashion their own attire, and its with that in mind that we’ve created this post.

Both Marvel and DC Comics Superheroes Costumes are Colour Coded

On one level, bright colours generally represent the forces of good, while darker shades denote an evil orientation and purple suited characters are chaotic or just plain crazy. But more interestingly, truly good superheroes tend to choose the primary colours red, blue, and yellow, (think Superman, Spider-Man, and Iron Man) while villains are relegated to secondary colours green, purple, and orange (Green Goblin, Doctor Doom, Lex Luthor). The rule gets confused with characters who borrow from both ends of the spectrum (Magneto, Hulk, Sinestro), but fans would agree these characters do so because they are themselves morally challenged.

Superman made his Costume in the Great Depression

the original superman costumeThe very idea of a super hero or ‘supernatural hero’ shedding clothing to don a power suit really coalesced with Superman’s debut in 1938, and his costume set the gold standard for everything that came after. He had the powerful physique, the logo displayed proudly on his chest, and bright, contrasting colors – form, iconography, color.

Superman originally wore red trunks (that look like modern underwear) outside his pants and this evolved from the circus ‘Strongman’ characters’ costumes of the 1930s, and was adopted by creators to signify strength. The red trunks have shrunk over the years and are now just a red belt worn over a blue body suit. But there were no ‘body suits’ known to man in the great depression. The powder blue suit you see in the photo was originally made of silk or ‘hose’ as it was called when worn by men as leggings. The first such full body ‘jump suit’ appeared years later for paratroopers and civilian parachuting enthusiasts.

Superman didn’t have Spandex Vinyl in the 1930s

Modern street performers have a leg up on the classic superheroes of the 50s, 60s and 70s because they have better materials for their body suits. Spandex World here in Toronto sells stretchy vinyl that will spring back to shape after being pulled in one of two directions. Other Spandex textile isotopes will stretch in all four directions. The two-direction material’s non-elastic plane is handy for shaping parts of the costume where a constricting force would soon become annoying. But the downside of these many new materials is their flammability. They are practically made of oil, and as such no laminates will protect their wearers from these suits’ chemical volatility.

Isabella Hoops Chooses Cotton and Leather for her Fire Show Costumes

Calen Jackson as Pyromeo Isabella Hoops EntertainmentNight time costumes created for the Northfire show are made of cotton or leather as they are the least flammable material.” Isabella Hoops jugglers and acrobats are well known throughout Southern Ontario Festivals in part because of their distinctive costumes. “These are hand wash only, and their stitching and materials are inspected before every show.”

When this author asked, “Where did you get your costumes?’, Isabella Hoops replied, “All of the Spin Starlet costumes are made by Jessica Mary Clayton, a girl in our group. The Snowflake Kid’s costume(s) was made by my costume designer Missy Westgate of Faery Tale Designs. She is amazing and has been such a great help.”

Isabella went on to scold this author when asked about an online source for costumes, “You cannot shop online for street performer’s costumes! You wouldn’t want people to have the same costume as you would you? All of our costumes are 100% unique, and most were custom made for the character. Some outfits cost less than $100 to create, while others cost us $250 and more, it depends on the finishing.” And by that she means the level of quality and whether or not the suit was made to last, or was just created for one or two appearances at a theme show.Isabella Hoops street performer at Snaokflake Kid at markham festival of lights 2017

The recent Toronto Guardian article, Street Performers Ignite 2017 Markham Festival of Lights shows Isabella Hoops as the Snowflake Kid working her hula hoops and then returning in a black cotton bodysuit to join the cast performing their acrobatic Fire Show. Pyromeo is the male lead in the show, and he wears a commanding black leather commode with a double-breasted suit jacket vest underneath.

You can however buy costume components online

Here are the parts and pieces of a famous costume that come up as Suggestions in Amazon if you buy a specific pair of red cotton long underwear that has web-like lines printed across its surface. The same suggestions arise if you buy ‘Steam-punk’ welding goggles.

More interesting are the gadgets available today. Wireless phone headsets used by office receptionists can be concealed inside headgear and used to send and receive communications that would astound yesterday’s superheroes, and of course these can also be used to give great advantage to street performers and sports mascots entertaining crowds.

Lucha wrestlers commonly wear masks which adds another element to the design mix.

Equestrian Fashion at Royal Horse Show in Horse Palace

Equestrian Fashion at the 2017 Royal Winter Fair

Royal fashion is still on display and very much in vogue among competitors at the annual Royal Winter Fair – Horse Show in Toronto. On Friday November 3rd 2017 Street Chic went inside the Horse Palace on the Exhibition Grounds to get a glimpse of the people inside North America’s foremost indoor equestrian event.

The Horse Palace is a modern stables complex built around an indoor riding ring, and this sand bottom arena is one of four competition venues at the show.  The two-story building is cut into rows of stalls and accommodates about three hundred and fifty horses. Various riding stable businesses set up shop to buy and sell hay, riding gear and the same horses for sale in Horse Canada magazine. All through the building visitors can spot celebrities including our nation’s past and present Olympians, and other top caliber riders and their celebrity horses. The Royal Horse Show offers these professionals the highest level competition in Equestrian sport – specifically Show Jumping, Indoor Eventing and Dressage.

Below is Dee Scott from Forest Hill Farm wearing her riding attire. Her outfit may look uniform to the untrained eye, but equestrians are particularly stylish people and seek brand labels and the latest fashions just like other athletes.

Struck Apparel are leaders in the search for more comfortable riding clothing.  This rider told us that these were her favourite riding pants because of the fit.  The company sponsors many equestrian riders and competitions to help research better products and they were among the many exhibitors with goods on display and for sale in the Exhibitor hall opposite the Ricoh Coliseum..

R.J Classic Jacket Softshell Collection combines traditional styling with athletically inspired fabrics to create the ideal show coat for riders of all levels. The machine washable lightweight softshell fabric is soft and stretchy. The garment has a mesh body lining for additional comfort. This style features three front buttons, double vented back, and two front pockets and retails for approx $75 CAD.

Dee was wearing her Tucci Boots and they aren’t cheap – even used riding boots can cost over $1000Tucchi Boots - leather riding boots at The Royal

This rider’s Sam Shield helmet would cost approximately $150 retail.  The Shadowmatte Pro is made of a fancy poly-carbonate composition with a reinforced chin strap. The entire outfit would retail for between $1800 and $2400 with the boots being the most expensive ingredient.

The Royal Agricultural Winter Fair takes place every November in the City of Toronto.

Even though this venue was the scene of an intense competition, some of the riders on the teams were dressed for more recreational riding. Traditional tweed jackets look great when hacking, and pair up perfectly with a classic pair of jodhpurs. Men and women wear coloured ties to finish off their outfits.

Some of the more prominent equestrian fashion retailers at the show included Cavalier Equestrian, Greenhawk, and Pleasant Ridge.  All of these stores are essentially the Canadian wholesale distributor of English and Western equestrian equipment, most of which is made in other countries and the best stuff is usually handcrafted in Europe.

The red poppy broach is not compulsory, but omnipresent all the same. The red poppy has been used to commemorate fallen soldiers (among the Allies) since World War I, and although its not part of the official dress code  (it would lose all meaning if it was obligatory), the poppy is seen on EVERY competitors’ riding attire because horse culture is inextricably intertwined with martial rituals, AND because it looks terrific on navy coloured wool riding coats.

Equestrian is a lifestyle as much as a sport.  The riding arena is filled with fashion items from Arista Equestrian, F.O.A.L Equestrian, Greenhawk Vancouver Island, and Victoria Saddlery.

Peekaboo Beans feature image in Calgary Alberta

Peekaboo Bean’s Fashion for Pre-Schoolers in Calgary Alberta

In the beautiful city of Calgary there is not a day that passes that you don’t see a variety of different clothing and fashion styles! Whether it’s the style of someone’s hair, their choice of outfit,  or the style of one of the amazing buildings in downtown Calgary, it is a truly beautiful and fashionable place! The word ‘fashion’ normally brings to mind well dressed women and men in the streets of a busy cosmopolitan city, or beautiful, well dressed models walking a runway.
For this blog post I decided to focus on a smaller segment of the fashion population, which are the kids who will define the fashion of the future.  Kids can be very fashionable, while still doing what they do best, which is just being kids!
Peekaboo Beans clothes lets kids do just that. This Street Chic blog post focuses on a sharp-looking line of Canadian designed kids’ clothing that are soft and comfortable yet durable and inspire kids to run, jump and play. You will find many fashionable kids on the streets and playgrounds of Calgary sporting the very stylish Peekaboo Beans clothing line. This apparel is great for young kids who are excited to play.
Peekaboo Beans has fashionable and comfortable clothes that kids all around Canada will wear and find comfortable. Peekaboo Beans was created with a vision that kids can play and look amazing at the same time. These clothes are also super durable and can last through even the toughest falls and stains! These clothes are also great because children can easily dress themselves without going crazy on patterns.
All Peekaboo Beans clothes are mix and match so even the littlest ones can dress themselves and always have a coordinating outfit!  The young people in the photos definitely stand out the streets of Calgary with their clothes. These boys enjoy running, playing and having fun like any kids should, but with the dependable fabrics their parents don’t need to worry about the Peekaboo Beans clothing getting ripped!
As if the clothing line of Peekaboo Beans isn’t amazing enough the founder of the company, Traci, has incorporated some great safety and comfort features into the clothes as well.  For example the clothing items with zippers include a chin guard to protect your child’s chin from getting caught in the zipper! And, just when you think it can’t get any better you don’t have to worry about itchy tags that can irritate your child’s skin.  Peekaboo Beans has cleverly taken care of this annoying feature by hiding the tags within the layers of the fabric.
Justin Trudeau with toddler wearing Peekaboo BeansThe very fashionable founder of Peekaboo Beans, Traci is always working to market her products and get the word out about her stylish and comfortable kids’ line.  She recently designed the outfits that were on display at our country’s capital on Canada Day, being modeled by the children of our Prime Minister, as can be seen in the picture attached.
All of the Peekaboo Bean prices are very reasonable as well given the amazing value that is coming with your clothes.  Most  dresses range anywhere from $40-$60. And for a boys T-shirt only $30-$40. To sum up my blog post I would like to address how these clothes tie into my platform, These clothes can let kids stay active and healthy in a very fashionable way and I hope all parents and kids decide to make the switch, as their website says “Once you go BEANS, you never go back!”

The Many Fashions of Medicine Hat Alberta

By Nyamal, Miss Teen Medicine Hat 2017

“I like to push the barriers when it comes to fashion” – Nyamal

I could not have said it better myself.  Fashion is an expression of both emotion and character. Every person alive adds more flavour to the world of fashion by daring to be unapologetic and adding their own flare to their outfits.

With this definition in mind, I could not have found better individuals to take part in this article with me.

Our first model is Mervat, a 19 year old college student who aspires to be a paramedic. She is outgoing, talkative, supporting, and the type of person who fills the room with energy simply by entering.

For this shoot we’d agreed to take photos at six pm on College Dr. She decided to wear something a little more casual sporting vintage denim jeans with a “Bad influence” graphic halter top with threaded roses. She had purchased her trendy top at Urban Planet and thrifted her Levi jeans from a friend. She accessorizes with a pair of sunglasses and beaded flower sandals. Adding a bit of colour with a camel, braided leather belt from Bluenotes she managed to create an outfit that’s tré cute but manageable.

I think my favourite thing about this look is that it’s inexpensive, quick to put together, and comfortable. All three things that are important when considering an outfit that will take you from the busy, lesson filled days to late night study sessions as a college student.

Bad inlfuence in Medicine Hat AlbertaI choose to take photos of her at the college because it holds a lot of memories and emotions for me and many others. Medicine Hat College offers a place of enjoyment and learning for its students and hatters alike. In the summer it provides camps for children and preteens. It also holds academic assistance for middle-schoolers and high-schoolers during the school year – I for one owe my successful school year to the program and study groups I was able to have at the college. Not only does the college act as a beacon of educational success but it adds more multiculturalism to our city with the many international students it holds.

With a mixture of retro and modern trend Merv rocks a confident and casual street style for a summer afternoon.

black body suit and dark blue denim jean shorts fashion in Medicine Hat albertaOur second look today is at Belle an 18 year old free spirit who is hands down one of the most exciting people you will ever meet. She is a dedicated hard worker currently holding two jobs at David’s Tea and Marshalls, both located in Medicine Hat mall. With a great love for friends and a soul meant to wonder she loves to take adventures. Being the wildheart she is she loves to take risks with her style. Today she decided to pair a fitted cotton-mesh black bodysuit from Garage with dark denim Hollister jean shorts and simple black flip flops for a cute summer look. A flattering outfit for checking out the nightlife downtown with friends.

For accessories, she gives us a small, grey, textured Guess coin purse with stunning shimmering and beige nails to give the look a little more glam factor.

The third look was created by Jordyn, an intelligent young lady that carries a sense of mature, calm about herself. Jordyn is 18 years old and currently working at the Cineplex before attending University in the Fall. She enjoys reading, soccer, driving, and listening to some of her favourite musicians such as 21 pilots and Halsey. She is a witty and creative individual with an amazing talent for painting. With a style that’s typically a little more alternative and hipster, Jordyn brings a blue and white graphic tee referencing the classic film Clueless complimented by a denim pairing of shorts and a baseball cap.Whatever shift on blue tie dye patterm t shirt Medicine Hat Alberta

She adds to the outfit with a pair of white and pink Nike trainers. Some may be against rips in clothing but I personally feel that a tear like this gives the top a small but adequate amount of character.

Credit for where you can purchase the clothing is given to Forever 21 for the shirt and Garage for her jeans.

Jordyn has a casual outfit with just a bit of edge; its perfect for catching a flick at the movies.

Eighteen year old Micayla involves herself in anything that revolves around the arts; it’s no wonder she’s able to wear such a bright coloured clothes and look stunning in daring outfits. The future student of Calgary University describes her overall style as more European inspired although she pulls inspiration from everywhere. blue jeans ball cap, round sunglasses and red shirt collar , pretty girl in Medicine Hat Alberta

For one of her looks Micayla sports a red v neck came from Garage costing $10.00 with an American Apparel bomber jacket that had costed her $120.00. For bottoms she styles Levis wedgie fit denim at the price of $130.00 and adds unique flare and colour with the addition of her $30.00 Topshop floral pink mule heels. She accessorizes this look with Guay Australia round frame shades and a Calvin Klein denim hat. The sunglasses prices at $75.00 and the cap at $45.00. This look is as high-end and beautiful as her second look.

For her second look, Micayla paired her vibrant floral heels with a full Topshop outfit consisting of a white ¾ sleeve ribbed, high neck sweater with blue suit cigarette trousers. Her outfit total being $30.00 for the top and $60.00 for the bottoms. She also uses a silver ring from south Africa and a black leather purse for accessories.blue cigarette trousers with white top in Medicine Hat Alberta

The way the pink heels and vibrant blue bottoms compliment each other is simply stunning.

gas lamps in downtown medicine Hat albertaDue to the artistic nature of Micayla and Jordyn some photos of the trio took place in front of the Esplanade located on 1 St SE. The Esplanade holds art shows, concerts, plays, and other events. It is a cultural hub open to all and meaningful to many.

Other photos were all taken on 2 St WE in downtown Medicine Hat from 8 to 9 pm. I felt this was the perfect place to take photos because the beauty of the streets, the gas lights, and it is also the location one of our long standing local business.

The Monarch Theatre is Canada’s oldest operating movie theatre. The theatre remains relevant playing new movies and also allows viewers to enjoy classical films now and then. Many citizens in the Hat hold fond memories here such as watching movies together with their father or spending times with friends.

gas lights in Medicine Hat AlbertaThe gas lights brighten up the streets of downtown Medicine Hat, and serve as a reminder of the importance of natural gas to the city.

Although we may not be a bustling fashion district, inspiring the next fall fashion week, we are a city filled with quality characters, risk takers, and unique fashions. Medicine Hat is a small city with a rich history and many beautiful locations as well as amazing people. Being able to spend time with my models and take a minute to appreciate our surroundings I think it’s safe to say that Medicine Hat has a lot to offer via fashion and amazing personality.

Female Bowlers’ Fashion in Sudbury Ontario

by Marissa, Miss Teen Greater Sudbury 2017

Fashion is everywhere! It’s something we deal with everyday. It consists of clothing, footwear, accessories, makeup and furniture. Fashion is a means of self-expression that allows people to try on many roles in life. Whether you prefer hip-hop or Chanel-chic, fashion accommodates the chameleon in all of us. It’s a way of celebrating the diversity and variety of the world in which we live. At the same time, fashion shouldn’t be taken too seriously or you lose the fun of it.

Fashion has been present throughout history and the trends change very rapidly and constantly. Fashion trends are influenced by several factors including political, economical, social and technological; the PEST analysis. Fashion forecasters can use this information to help determine growth or decline of a particular trend. The media can play a significant role when it comes to fashion. Editorial critique, guidelines, and commentary can be found on television, in magazines, newspapers, social networks, fashion websites and blogs.

Why does fashion always change?
Fashion changes indicate how a society or a culture can change. Fashion expresses where you belong, your financial status, political orientation, state of mind, identity and of course preferred music style. There are clothes which never go out of fashion, such as jeans, skirts and t-shirts, and wearing these items always radiate self-confidence. World events determine trends. For example the hippy culture was very popular in the 1970s and dominated the world of fashion.

Fashion recycles itself time and time again.

The following pictures were taken at Garson Bowl on Falconbridge road located in Sudbury, Ontario. It shows the different types of outfits these girls wear when they go bowling.

Hannah, age 19, is rocking a very cute but casual outfit. Her shirt was bought at Winners for 18$ and her jeans are from Garage for 40$.  Fashion isn’t always about who spends the most money, as long as you look confident you can rock anything!

Leah, age 17 (left), Mackenzie, age 17 (middle), Matilda, age 17 (right). Leah is wearing a very fun flirty off the shoulder shirt that she purchased at American Eagle for 40$ and denim shorts from Garage for 20$!

bowling alley fashion Mackenzie is rocking denim shorts from Garage for 20$ and a cute t-shirt from American Eagle for 31$.  Matilda is sporting a comfy but cute look! She’s wearing a t-shirt from Brandy Melville purchased for only 18$ and denim shorts from American Eagle for 50$.

Nothing is more beautiful than a confident person with a shining smile ready to take on the world.

Sibling Fashion Clash in Lawn, Nfld

By Bailey, Miss Teen Newfoundland and Labrador 2017

We often look at style in a very black and white fashion, we see stylish individuals as those in tall heels and flouncy skirts, however, we don’t usually recognize style as soccer cleats and jerseys. Growing up with a younger sister who is the exact opposite of me allowed me to understand that just because not only our styles (like our personalities) clash doesn’t mean that one of us is more stylish than the other.Kennedy has soccer style - sports fashion in Victoria BC

Meet Kennedy, my 12-year sister, a grade eight student at Holy Name of Mary Academy in my hometown of Lawn. She is the starting striker of the local peninsula soccer team; when she’s not practicing her shot, she’s playing a game. Because of this, Kennedy lives in soccer uniforms and running shoes, that’s her style.

You can see her on my absolute favorite street in my tiny town, Harbour Drive, which runs through the heart of Lawn. I love this street so much because it holds so much history as it sits right on the edge of the stages and docks that supported the fishing industry, an industry that supported my community for many, many years.

Fashion clash on harbour drive in LawnKennedy is sporting a rather serious look in this photo and is decked out completely in Adidas; the black shorts and shirt are made of a light-weight, breathable material that makes busy days and practices more comfortable. Of course, no soccer game is complete without her favorite Adidas socks, with the signature stripe and to add some color to this ensemble she paired it was these lime green and bright orange, Messi cleats. You can pick up Kennedy’s entire outfit from your local Sports Chek. The caged rocks you see pictured behind Kennedy also hold great significance to me as I painted them as a child, with some of my best friends as an art project, just another reason to love this street.

Family fashion on the waterfront in Newfoundland and Labrador

Although Kennedy is much more comfortable in her shorts and socks she tried on my style for size and stepped out in this gorgeous floral dress from Nobel U. The beautiful blue and pink light up against her dark complexion. The background of this photo captures the spirit of my town perfectly and allows me to show off our beautiful history.

coral cream dress Of course, I couldn’t miss out on an opportunity to show off one of my favorite dresses from La Scala, a brand that is available for purchase at Pseduio, Envy and online. This dress is a beautiful coral-orange color with an eyelet lace bodice and a heavy skater skirt that is perfect for twirling around. I’ve paired it with a cream, rhinestone, floral shaped necklace from Ardene; the creamy beige color contrasts nicely with the bright dress. To finish it off I’m wearing cream and floral heels from Call It Spring, the floral print is a lovely mix of blush, coral, and raspberry.

Although my sister and I have widely different styles, we both love how we dress, we feel comfortable in our own personal fashion choices. No matter what we wear or how we choose to express ourselves, we always remember that we are our own kind of beautiful and our styles are simply a reflection of that, the most important lesson is to understand that our beauty lies beyond our style and beyond what is on the outside but lives within who were are as people.

Fashion to Fitness in Downtown Toronto

By Nicole, Miss Teenage South Central Ontario 2017

What is fashion? It is a distinctive trend in style in a way which a certain person dresses. Fashion is a way for someone to express themselves, and who they are. The beauty about fashion is there is no right or wrong way to dress, trends come and go changing every single day, so you just have to wear what you want, and walk in it as if you are on your own runway! The most important thing to remember is to always be comfortable in your own skin cause that’s what makes you fabulous!

In my role as Miss teenage South Central Ontario, I ventured out on the streets of Toronto, in search for the different styles out there. My first step, was to pick what street I would begin my journey on. It was actually an easy choice for me; I decided to pick one of the longest streets we have in Canada, and that is “Yonge Street.”

To put a spin on things, I decided to write this Street Chic fashion article with a focus on my platform, which is, Empowering people through physical activity.  I wanted to capture the look of people dressing fashionable at work, but able to easily change and keep a healthy lifestyle, by going to work out. Which is why my location was located more specifically near the Goodlife fitness where I train everyday. Some of the people I interviewed worked out that same day, while others had different set days that they go to the gym.

I noticed a lot of students, and people from their workplace going to the gym on their lunch break. Since I had stayed a few hours I saw them walk into the gym fashionable, and leave just as beautiful. That is because they picked outfits that were cute but comfortable, and easy to change. This goes to show, it’s easy to live a healthy lifestyle but be well dressed at the same time. Even if you aren’t wearing the most elaborate clothes, and a lot of accessories, I believe that having a fit healthy body is something you can wear as well.  I asked all the people a series of questions, and named my survey “fashion to fitness.” I also asked for their permission to use their first name and picture. Here is what I got!

After interviewing all four of my volunteers, I came to a few conclusions…. I saw that some know they have a busy schedule, but they still find time to pick a fashionable outfit for the morning and change after to workout. Their solution was to prepare their clothes the night before! They planned their week at their own pace, and decided how many times they feel like going to the gym. Some of these peoples photos, were them on their days off. We are all allowed to have a break, and that’s the perfect moment we can take time, to have fun with picking our outfits. It’s easy, and rewarding on so many levels being active, there shouldn’t be anything stopping all of you!!!! In fact I truly believe having a strong body, that you feel happy, and confident in, is the best accessory that you can wear! Thank you for following along, and remember you are always fabulous! Summer Fashion in Biggar Saskatchewan

By Shiela Antoniette Montes, Miss Teenage Saskatchewan 2017

“Style is a way to say who you are without having to speak” –Rachel Zoe

Fashion is everywhere and the joy of dressing is an art. Fashion doesn’t only matters on the price but its quality; not specifically defined by its style but most especially the confidence in bringing up the style.

PROFESSIONAL LOOK

Busy life and hectic schedules are part of the fashion industry, but even at work, you have lots of choices to look and feel good. Two girls in town whom I consider to be top fashion leaders in this field, Kathleen and Carla make it look easy to achieve a professional look that would always fit everywhere.Kathleen and Cloe in Biggar Saskatchewan

Kathleen believes that fashion depends on how you can make it on your own and carry yourself with confidence. She grew up admiring her mom’s professional look. “I wanted to be like her someday who always look professional with a youthful glow”. In her picture, she’s giving the life of a “VIP” professional look. To achieve this, it’s important make sure that the outfit highlights the professionalism of a person. For the “VIP Professional look” she is wearing a white lacy fit top from Le Château, costs $48.00; matched with a pinstriped navy skirt from Cleo that costs $65.00.

Tip 1: Accessories rely on what kind of event you’re up to and sometimes depend on the weather.
For Kathleen’s accessories, she picked a white earring from winners, costs $17.00 and gold bracelet that costs $25.00 from Garage. For necklace, she had a gold one with amethyst and diamond that costs $300.00 from Ben Moss (you can also get it from Peoples). Tip 2: For footwear, always remember that footwear should match its color from your outfit. For her style, she wore a black strappy heel from Guess that costs $168.98. Tip 3: Bags are the essential of your confidence and feeling for the day. When I asked her about what she feels for that day, she told me she feels girly and kinda sassy. For her outfit, a pink neon bag (or any light colors) from Sears that costs $48.00. The bag made her achieve the youthful glow she ever wanted.

On the other hand, Carla, a girl who believes that fashion can also be simple yet sophisticated. The jumpsuit is a perfect outfit for her. She purchased the black jumpsuit from Gap for $130.00, the white bag from Guess that costs $56.00, and for the footwear, she had a brownish-black wedge sandal from Ackermans for $40.00.

DENIM LOOK

I love Denim. Denim is my favorite outfit for it is versatile and always trendy. There are lots of styles you can make in denim. All you have to do is to portray it very well and wear it comfortably. In this section, my team and I present the 3 kinds of denim look: the outgoing, the adventurer, and the sweet-sassy look.

Denim on the street in Saskatchewan

“Denim represents my personality, a girl who has decency and at the same time sexiness” a line from Trixie, who expresses denim in an outgoing style. She wore a denim hipster pants from American Eagle that costs $33.00, matched with a black sleeveless fitted top from Ardene that costs $12.00 and a denim jacket from winners, costs $10.00. Tip 4: Denims fit to any footwear. Trixie uses a beige sandal from Call it Spring that costs $54.00. She matches her outfit to a ship-like earring from Ardene that costs $5.00 and a white pearl necklace from Guess that costs $32.00.

For an adventurer look, it should be a simple and comfortable. According to Sam, “Denim is a good outfit for any adventures, you can move easily and adequately”.  Sam wore a denim pants from Winners Confederation Mall costs $50.00 matched with a blue polyester polo from R & W Co for $68.00 and a black Adidas rubber shoes from Sports Check that costs $90.00. Tip 5: For a total package adventurer look, match everything with sunglasses to look classier.

For a sweet-sassy look, I believe that skate skirt is the answer for that. Guess denim polo costs $54.00, skate skirt from Amazon that costs $24.00 with shipping and to match up the sweet and sassy look, I chose to pair everything with a black chained high-heeled boots from Avon that costs $44.00. For my accessories, I wore a gold with black pearls bracelet that costs $25.00, black pearl necklace that costs $30.00 and an earrings, costs $24.00, all from Le Château.

SUMMER LOOK

Summer is the most awaited season of the year. Summer brings the easiest fashions of all. According to Jobelle, “summer look is the most expressive and provides opportunity to show one’s self through their skin”.

Jobell and Summer in Saskatchewan

Jobelle is wearing summer clothes that emphasizes her fresh look. She achieved summer look with a dark green off shoulders from Ardene that costs $15.00 and shorts that costs $25.00. She matched it with white flats from Joe Fresh that costs $20.00 and a sunglass from Coach that costs $80.00.

SPORTY LOOK

In Canada, summer is a perfect season for sweating and maintaining a good fit. Even in the field of sports, fashion is still appealing. Kathleen and I are portraying a look on how to achieve a good fashion in sports.

Tip 6: Sports’ clothes must be simple but not too naïve. The most important is that you wear clothes where u can move freely.

Sport fashion in Biggar Saskatchewan

Kathleen wore a Nike dry fit short from Sports Check. It costs $32 and the Nike Sports Bra is $48.00. She matched it with a Nike Runners from Sports Check that costs $162 and the Pink Neon Workout Vest from Winner for $28.00.
