A Dream Crafter. Behind Chinese Haute Couture.

The word Haute Couture comes from the French. Haute means high-end, Couture refers to sewing, embroidery and other crafts.

In 1858, French fashion designer Charles Frederick Worth opened the world’s first haute couture store in Paris, setting a very specific image and standard for it and the story of Haute Couture began.

Haute Contour studios design made-to-order clothes for private clients, with more than one fitting. From Gucci to Alexander McQueen, embroidery to opulent gold frocks, Chinese Haute Couture is comprised of avant-garde garments that are steeped in Chinese symbolism and expertly illuminate traditional handicraft techniques.

Today, as the industry’s never stops to surprise us with billion digitals about sales and its international growth, fashion becomes more and more commercial. Haute Couture, is the perfect imagination and throw-back for the golden times, when clothes were made to be arts and shape ones behaviour.

From design to production, the process of ritual sensation, the unique and intimate experience of the noble, Haute Couture is undoubtedly the ultimate dream of every single woman. As the fashion world keeps growing impetuously, the spirit of Haute Couture becomes even more precious.

In our Toronto, there is an haute couture workshop that inherits this mysterious craft. Shanghai Liyang Custom Tailoring Studio is a privately ordered workshop, mainly engaged in high-end private tailored suits, shirts, Tang suits, cheongsams, dresses, and the sale of some accessories (ties, silk scarves and fabrics).

Song’s commitment to honouring and revitalizing forgotten Chinese craft practices is reflected in the intricate embroidery of her work, as well as in her label and atelier, Shanghai Liyang Custom Tailoring Studio.

Today, with the common interest of arts and fashion, StreetChic was lucky enough to  be invited to have a sit-down interview with Ms. Song.

Song’s definition of fashion in the interview explained the reason why the high-end handicraft workshop lasted for a long time in the history. Fashion is the art of excellence, not just the goods that are quickly consumed.

Song herself grew up during the Cultural Revolution, when only drab, shapeless Mao suits were acceptable attire. A revival of fashion and art was needed for a long long time.

Song ’s come to symbolize a new China—and the way non-Europeans and non-Americans are finally becoming forces in international fashion.

To be sure, Song’s designs have drawn on Chinese culture in blazers, suits or Qi Pao, not just in the embroidery and fabrics, but in their motifs. Looking at her design, the fabric and cutting are obviously premium and high-end.

The color is as beautiful as the sunset, and the texture is soft as the moonlight.

She uses premium fabrics for her design, such as silk and wool. These fabrics not only look much more superior on body, but also produced with nature ingredients which allow them to be so comfortable against the body and to remain an extremely long lasting quality.

Song has the eyes of observation to spot customers’ needs and likings within a few moments of casual chatting. She also has the hands of artists to work with these delicate fabrics and quickly turn them into pieces and pieces of art.

Song believes, with good fabric and design, clothing can also become a treasure to hand over to the next generations.

Shanghai Liyang Custom Tailoring Studio can easily find the connection between Haute Couture and each customer, noble or elegant, delicate or bold, all by you.  You can find this tailoring studio at Pacific Mall where thousands of people enjoy the unique shopping experience.

The Top 6 ‘HOME-GROWN’ Fashion Labels in Canada

Today, Street Chic takes you to see who made it to the list of our all-time favorite Canadian ‘home-grown’ designers, and your comprehensive guide on where to shop these Canadian fashion labels!

Girls' Dresses

Street Chic Fashion

When it comes to fashion in North America, Canadian fashion labels weren’t to be the first choice to a lot of people. Especially at the age when fast fashion brands from Europe and the US, like forever 21, H&M and Zara, have been expanding like fireworks in Canada’s local
market. However, in recent years, Canada has raised the bar with its impressive list of designers and brands that continue to storm the globe.

Of course, we’re not famed for dominating the High Street, but whatever our shortfall in that area, we more than make up for in genuine homegrown fashion flair. And we know exactly how to benchmark our style.

Quality

Canadian fashion is an art in its own right. Toronto plays host to an acclaimed Fashion Week on a bi-annual basis. Whilst this anticipated event has changed hands and been re-branded numerous times since its debut in 1985, it remains a focal Canadian celebration of artistic
talent. With Canadian style on the rise, there’s no time like the present to start spending some of your hard earned cash on those statement pieces you’ve been lusting after. Dust off those credit cards and put them to good use.

Jessica Cianchino, Miss Markham World 2018

Jessica’s Fashion from the Streets of Markham

By Jessica Cianchino, Miss York Region World 2018

In the Greater Toronto Area, downtown Markham is the newest downtown.  This is my city!  Markham has many diverse cultures, many thriving and expanding businesses, and a wide range of entertainment for people of all ages and ethnicities.  And this small town turned big city, like myself, is just beginning.

Markham’s potential is well known.  As Canada’s High Tech Capital the area is a great place to live and work, and relax after work – its easy to find fun here.  My growing city has come to life with the development of a new and impressive downtown core, and this new commercial section hosts many modern attractions.  Cineplex VIP Cinema, as well as other diverse restaurants and boutiques are why my family and friends love going downtown.  Also, a merry-go-round designed specifically for the city incorporates all Canadian-themed sculptures. Experiencing the Pride of Canada Carousel is yet another reason why people should come see the amazing attractions in downtown Markham.

Property developers in Markham prove they are environmentally aware with every new building they erect; the Remington Group encourages green commercial developments. This development group set-up their own Environmental Quality Control program in an attempt to emphasize the importance of preserving the environment while expediently developing the downtown core. Remington Group’s green work was awarded LEED ® which is a fold status for residential and commercial buildings. This organization has implemented green practices in the newest urban areas by introducing natural light, solar power and fresh air.  I’m so proud that the city in which I live is not only growing in business and tourism, but also in environmental consciousness.

My style is influenced by Hip Hop music and urban culture.  The way I style myself mimics what I’ve seen in downtown Toronto, but I put my own twist on it. I usually dress in athletic wear, influenced by the sports I play, infused with styles from big city streets. People my age dress similar to those from the big city, however being from Markham makes my style unique to me.

Walking through our new downtown, I can feel the essence of my city captured through the street art made by local artists. The shops and restaurants run by local residents are bigger now and almost make me feel like I’m in a smaller version of downtown Toronto.  The City of Markham is growing into a city that will provide great opportunities and entertainment to its residents and it welcomes newcomers. It’s astonishing to witness my city grow into a bigger community attracting the attention of others all across Ontario. I remember growing up here before there was a downtown. Its so amazing to be able to watch my city flourish and expand into a successful place that welcomes all kinds of people, just as it has for myself and my family. I look forward to seeing the ongoing progress in the coming years. This new urban center, no matter how much it changes, will continue to be the heart of our community, and I am so proud to be a part of representing this growing metropolis to the rest of the world.

Fashion Lookbook with Alice Li, Miss Ontario World 2018

Miss World Ontario 2018 Alice Li is no stranger to the world of fashion. She has walked Toronto Women’s Fashion Week twice and also designs her own line of couture gowns.  Alice Li’s Instagram feed is filled with the latest styles and it’s full of color. Want to know where she gets everything? Today, she will take us through a few of her iconic looks during her reign as Miss Ontario!

Alice Li at BMO field and CanEggs photo shoot
Every girl needs a little black dress, right? It’s one of those basic essentials that your wardrobe always starts out with. Alice went to a VIP balcony viewing party for the Toronto Wolfpack Rugby League in a versatile black dress that suits many different occasions. The Wolfpacks were playing against the London Broncos at the Toronto Allan A. Lamport Stadium which was within perfect view from the 19th floor balcony. If you ever visit Toronto, you’ve got to check out at least one sports game! Aside from the game on this busy day, Alice wore this dress as a master smoothie maker for CanEggs egg white powder and as a makeup model for Modern Makeup Canada. You can’t go wrong with this outfit from Winners! She styled the plain black dress with shoes from Sirens that finished the look with a pop of colour. That’s always an advantage of wearing solid colors – you can get creative with how you style everything else without being too much!
Alice Li - Miss Ontario World 2018, evening gown
Now here is another one of Alice’s favourite looks… from Hudson’s Bay! This asymmetrical shoulder gives the dress just the right amount of style, without overpowering its simplicity of pure red. The silhouette gives it a very classic and polished look, perfect for a day or night out. She decided to match the dress with a pair of Mirelivia shoes from Call It Spring to give it some summer vibes! In the photo above, Alice is also styled with merchandise from the official TTC Shop – notice the umbrella is a map of the Toronto subway system. Given that this photo was taken in the heart of downtown Toronto at Nathan Phillips Square, you can’t get anymore Toronto than this!

Miss Ontario World 2018 - Alice Li, street fashion Toronto
This is an outfit that gets people talking and heads turning! Alice fell in love with this dress as soon as she saw it at Marla’s and here she is standing in front of the University of Toronto’s historic Hart House.  Hart House is known to be Hogwarts-esque with its architecture and interior design, for all the Harry Potter fans out there!  Gold and red is such an uncommon color combination but for this dress, it works!  Alice is pairing it with shoes from Nine West and a timeless pink purse from Guess. This whole look is elegant but cute at the same time! Would you head to school in this outfit? At the University of Toronto, fashion is our passion!

Skater Girl Fashion in Calgary

by Kansas King, Miss Calgary World 2018

When you have a longboard, you never know where the trail is going to take you.

Calgary skateboard fashion

Shaw Millennium Park is the largest skatepark in North America.  Skaters from all over the world come to this Calgary hot spot. It has ramps, bowls, tunnels, anything your adrenaline junkie heart desires.Calgary skatepark - Shaw Milenium skateboard park, Calgary Alberta

beauty at the skatepark

There isn’t just skate equipment here though. There are over 60 unique murals around the city, which bring a modern vibe to a seasoned town.

Your wardrobe should reflect your interests. Skating downtown brings casual and sporty together.

The board you choose describes your personality, so rock it.   Landyachtz is the Canadian company that you will see a majority of Calgarians riding.

girl at skateboard park, low angle, skateboard fashion for girls

Wear your favorite band tee and snapback, show off that skater side. Oh, and you see those poles in the background? Those were lasers made in 1999 when the park was first built. Unfortunately, they had to be permanently shut down because they distracted airplanes. The more you know…

July just creeps in, and all of a sudden it’s Stampede. It’s time to kick off your Converse, grab your cowboy boots (that you bought last minute) and go downtown!

Calgary boots as fashion in the stampede

The Calgary tower may no longer be the tallest tower in the city, but it still stands out amongst the rest. The days are longer and the days are hotter, soak it in, because it won’t last long!

Girls, put on that cute dress you bought from The Store Upstairs boutique in Airdrie, and eat all the mini donuts you want, because The Calgary Stampede is only two weeks of the year.

In the background you can see Bloom, a winning art project created in 2013. The sun is setting on The Calgary Stampede. The horse trotting, country music, and carnival games ring in your head. Can’t wait to see what next year brings.

Calgary is full of amazing paths throughout the city. Riverwalk is one of the most popular pathways. During the day, it is a little piece of heaven for lovers of the outdoors. It’s a great place to longboard. Gliding across bridges, inhaling fresh air, hearing the flow of the water under you, and seeing smiling faces as you drift by. Not only does this pathway decrease the amount of cars on the road, but it gives a calm and safe getaway from a busy life.

Romantic Hot Spots in Calgary at Night

St. Patrick’s Island pedestrian bridge is a popular spot when the sun starts to go down.

Now boys, if you are planning a date with that cute girl you met at Stampede, this might just be the place for a romantic walk. Take her for a nice dinner at Booker’s BBQ Grill and Crab Shack, listen to some Blues music, then watch the sunset over the water.

The night isn’t over quite yet, there is more to see when the lights go down. The Scotiabank Saddledome takes the spotlight up on Scotsman Hill. You can hear the C of Red, as they cheer when the Calgary Flames score a goal.

The night ends with bright stars in the sky and great memories in mind.

Tips to rock that chic winter style in 2017

Ugh, that’s cold… Snow has finally arrived in Toronto. Cold weather is officially knocking at the door. Fashion lovers, don’t be afraid! We are not going to compromise on styles and fashion. Today, let’s talk about how to stay chic in 2017.  Remember these tips and fit them with your own personal styles. You will rock the winter fashion as a pro!

Fur

The key to a stay fashionable in cold seasons is to stay warm first. The furs are a great element to include in your winter wardrobe. They are comfy, warming and fashionable.

It keeps your neck warm, while looking stylish.

If you are afraid of looking too overdressed with this element on your body, you can simply go with a fur hood on your jacket or coat.

Military Green

Across social media and street styles, blogger and editors are seemingly obsessed with military green, using olive-inspired shade to add a utilitarian touch to their looks.

This is a great shade for winter, since it reminds people of the vivid atmosphere of spring and summer.

Also it adds an interesting (but subtle) tone to grey and black basics without making too much of statement.

Where to buy??

Canada Goose sounds like something you must have to survive winter in Toronto. If you still don’t have it yet, definitely get one!

If you don’t like this colour, you can always find some other colours from this brand.

You can basically get from everywhere, but we suggest Yorkdale, since they have the biggest selection of colours and choices. Or you can simple make it convenient to just order online.

The official photographer Darren Lee had a difficult time finding low-contrast areas to shoot his models and you can see the side of his set in the background of this image below. he was putting models up against the rocks in the shade of small trees and letting the background blow-out, but I was up on the rocks exposing for the sun and trying to keep the busy beach visible in the distant background.

Country Inspired Fashion in Calgary Alberta

by Cailyn, Miss Teenage Calgary 2017

I live in Calgary and consider myself lucky when it comes to fashion. We have everything we need here including fancy evening dresses and country wear, which includes cowboy boots and, during The Calgary Stampede, a cowboy hat. Even for simply enjoying a Saturday night inside with the girls, you have to still go out and pick up that pizza, and so you have to look semi presentable.  That’s the look I find myself wearing more than I’d like to admit.

In Calgary, we have many diverse fashion styles; some folks like long, baggy shirts worn as a dress with a plaid around your waist, while others seem to always choose sweat pants and jersey tops. These styles are not gender specific and us younger ladies like to occasionally wear a man’s shirt or a blazer.

I have four different looks that I find myself wearing most frequently, and sometimes I mix them up and combine styles.

My first look is something you can wear to a casual event/ outing or you can dress it up with heels like I did or even a bit of jewelry like bracelets or a longer necklace since the front is quite plain and you’re good to go to a nice dinner.

The model is me, Cailyn. Here I’m wearing a shoulder less top which is a must in every girls closet during the summer (free those shoulders) but due to the fact that there is no hiding annoying bra straps I highly recommend a strapless bra, which I know can be tricky to keep up sometimes but your outfit will look so much better. The shirt is just a plain high waisted black skirt which gives you the freedom to tuck in your shirt or leave it untucked, the shirt I’m wearing was quite long, so I decided to have it tucked-in for a cleaner and more put-together look.

My second outfit is ‘country inspired’ and is something I find myself wearing quite often. This is a look I could wear for a day out, to the Calgary stampede or another local outing like many country-themed restaurants and bars we have in town. I chose a light coloured jeans and top because not only does it get less hot, the subtle notes make your boots pop. Regardless you could just as easily throw on some dark blue jeans and the outfit would still work.

Traditionally, with cowboy boots, I would wear boot cut jeans that cover them, but not and then I like to show them off by wearing tight jeans such as a ‘skinny jean’ to show those boots off. Also on a side note is like to add the fact that cowboy boots are one of my favorite shoes because they are versatile and functional but also they look great with jeans and if planned right they go amazingly well with a skirt or cute summer dress.

Cailyn on the Mustang workout clothes in CalgaryMy third look is street wear that is comfortable for an exercise  work-out and nice enough that you could wear outside and do your daily deeds. I went with white sweat pants because I feel like they are a great statement piece considering how often you actually see white sweatpants. I went with the white tank top to blend in under to make the black jersey standout more. Then I used the red bandana and lipstick to give the look a pop of color and as a standout piece. Also I swear by Converse running shoes, they are my absolute favorite sneakers because you can where them with anything at any time!Cailyn Miss Teen Calgary

For my last outfit I went for more of a classic look with the 50s style red dress. You can wear it whenever and its light enough to wear in the summer and once winter rolls around you can throw on some leggings or thighs and put on an old style knitted jacket (the one I have reminds me of a sock monkey)

I think my favorite part about any of these outfits is that you can wear them anytime and dress them up or down due to your mood and what you are dressing for.

Outstanding fashion in the old port of Montreal Quebec - Canadian fashion - Clementime on Instagaram

Outstanding Fashion in the Old Port of Montreal

by Alexandra, Miss Teen Monteregie 2017

On a Saturday evening in summer, fashion abounds in the Old Port of Montreal. It had been a long time since I had gone there. It is a place that represents my childhood , I always went to the science center growing up, fascinated by all the scientific phenomena that I could not explain at the time. It made me really nostalgic, for I had forgotten about it.  So I decided to choose La Place de la Promenade for the article. It’s amazing to think that this place has been around for more than 350 years. This port has played a key role in the economic activity of the metropolis. More than 12.5 million tons of merchandise used to transit through Montreal. In 1963, it was declared as a historic district. Since 2005, the old port has been redesigned to become a touristic attraction. It welcomes six million visitors annually.

pink purse beige shorts and black top tourist fashion in Old Montreal

Lucky for me, Gloria happened to be one of the visitors it welcomed that day. Her incredible fashion sense made her stand out from the crowd. I’m usually not a fan of pink, but I found that her purse truly brought a unique touch to the outfit. It perfectly complemented her camel shaded Wilfred Boissier shorts made of authentic vegan suede from Aritzia as well as her 100% viscose Italian black Rio top from Brandy Melville. Her accessories were like the cherry on the cake, they added an elegant touch to the ootd. The Aviator sunglasses come from Rayban. They bear their name because they were originally designed for the pilots of the US air force since 1937. They remain trendy despite their age. As for her 100% cotton bandana print scarf it comes from Forever21. To top it all off, her cute fluffy Steve Madden faux fur slippers really put the finishing touch to the outfit.

Outfit Price

  • Glasses : $190,00
  • Bandana : $14,90
  • Top : $20,00
  • Purse : ≈ $1000,00
  • Shorts : $75,00$
  • Shoes : $40,00

TOTAL : ≈ $1339,90

Gloria’s exquisite sense of style isn’t the only thing that defines her. Born and raised in Canada but originally from El Salvador, she pursued a career as a makeup artist based in Mississauga Ontario. She’s currently an education trainer for new stores in the Greater Toronto Area. I’m glad I had the chance to meet her!

Clement

My evening didn’t end there, later that night I met another makeup artist: Clément.  He is a new youtuber who uses his channel to inspire and share his passion: makeup. He discovered his passion by stealing his sister’s makeup and draws his inspiration from several celebrities of the beauty industry such as Jeffree Star, Coco Channel, Katy Perry. He admires these artist because they all value self-confidence and acceptance. I stalked his channel and his style immediately captivated me! He distinguishes himself by his unique colorful style that pops. I suggest you go take a quick look at Clementime his Instagram and Youtube channel! Don’t worry, all the products he uses are cruelty-free, a very important moral for him. On a more serious note, he is currently studying at the Gérald-Godin college in Social Science and he wants to go into the field of politics as a deputy.

Clément’s outfit

My favourite part of the outfit was obviously his makeup. Honestly, it was surprising to see a guy wearing makeup, but I absolutely loved it! I believe in equality and I admire his confidence.  His shark print cotton slim fit shirt from Le Château was matching his black umbrella as well as his Ralph Lauren shoes. All of this, was  completed with a pink cotton pair of shorts from American Eagle. Let’s not forget his cruelty-free backpack from Matt&Nat.

Clement you have really marked me with your beautiful energy, I wish you success!

Outfit Price

  • Shirt : $50,00
  • Umbrella : $15,00
  • Shoes : $80,00
  • Shorts : $70,00
